About this deal

Straight away this came across very easy compared to using sand and cement and would save a huge amount of time. When using sand and cement to point between the paving slabs we have to be careful with how wet the mix is as to not stain the slabs, which also means dabbing the area with a damp sponge as you go along. How did your paving look once you gave it a good sweep/clean? Has the staining gone now that it has had a few weeks to weather in? If you still have staining then could you attach a picture? Hi Emma and a great question! As the grouting compound uses a resin I believe that yes you can simply sweep some more grouting on top of your paving to top it up. At least we’ve always done this when needed with no problems as of yet! Patio or paving grout, is a mixture used to fill the gaps between paving slabs or tiles. Grout is used both on patios and in between bathroom/kitchen tiles. It can be used for laying a new patio, or repairing an existing patio. After finding the original patio layer jsut skimmed 2-4 mm of compound over sand cement, I had to chissle it all out to 2CM depth

We now notice that some of the slabs appear to have a grey film on them especially around the edges but some more so across other parts. We’ve dry brushed them several times and even scrubbed the larger affected areas with warm water and washing up liquid, but the “grey film” remains. Another option is to use a traditional sand and cement mix. This mix is made up of four parts sand and one part cement, and is still often used by contractors. The grout is permeable and fast drying, so water doesn’t pool in the recesses or cause mould or damp. They are saying with Sika Fast Fix, this will fill the gaps between the slabs, this will stop the slabs from moving. Hi Paul and thank you for your comment. We are still using it with no problems as of yet…fingers crossed! The Bostik Easy To Use Patio Grout can simply be brushed into the paving joints for an aesthetic and hard-wearing finish that stands the test of time. Highly water permeable – no pooling on the patio Weed control – provides a natural barrier for weed growth

Hi Kim, I once layed an Indian sandstone drive and we used a wet mortar mix (sand and cement) as we were unsure on the durability of the paving compound. Epoxy grout requires sand to be mixed with an epoxy resin. There are often three components that require mixing together. These may be liquid or solids. Sika FastFix All Weather is a ready-to-use, self-setting paving jointing compound with Active Resin Technology for advanced durability. It sets hard and will not wash out, whilst remaining water permeable. Sika FastFix All Weather is perfect for outdoor patios, pavements and paths with joints over 5mm wide and 20mm deep. Fast and easy to use, it can be applied in any weather conditions even in the rain. I wondered if you had had chance to read this? It’s been a few months now and big chunks of it have now come out, despite it my using a finger trowel and compacting (more than they suggest, which I did think was the same amount of work as normal grout?!)

It could be worth reading my article titled ‘how to point and re-point a patio) as this explains my way of removing the old mortar (sand/cement). Please see the link below.

Hi Robert, may I ask how long ago the grouting compound was put down? We often struggle to remove any excess residue within the first few days but brushes off fairly easily after this time frame. This type of grout tends to be more durable than pre-mixed grout. Once hardened, it should last over 10 years, and your patio should also be able to withstand jet washing. Traditional Sand and Cement Mix If you can’t find the help needed on our DIY blog then why not head over to our forum where you can can help from both tradesmen and other DIY experts. Do you have any recommendations for the holes they have created already? Should I just top it up and try to stop them coming out? 🙂

Where are you?

All the patio grouts I’ve recommended are specifically made for ease of use. I’ve only selected premixed grouts, and most can be applied single handedly with just a brush. Some products, like the EASYJoint Paving Grout require the paving to be kept wet during application. It seems to have gone well and I’m hoping it will set in the next coupe of days. The only concern I seem to have is that I wonder if it has changed the colour of our stones or is this just an illusion. I applied it the same way as you have described and I don’t believe there is any of the compound remaining on the surface. However, the stones that have the compound in the joins look a little more ‘sandy’. I think that this is just because they now have a buff coloured join as opposed to grey cement which was there previously. This all changed when we were laying a light colored Indian Sandstone and the customer asked that we use the Sika Fast Fix All Weather Self Setting Joint compound as this is what a family member had used on the same slabs. I’m not one to argue with the customer, as if I had used my own way of jointing then he may have me redo the work if they aren’t happy. To apply this grout, it can help to have an extra person on hand to make the process easier. A lot of water needs to be added during application – so it’s best if one person sweeps the compound into the joints whilst the other adds the water. This grout can be applied in all weathers, so there’s no need to wait for a sunny day. Grout will prevent paving slabs from moving. It also prevents weeds from growing between the slabs and reduces water damage. When patios are fixed with grout they look neat and professionally finished. Different Types of Patio Grout

Additionally, this grout must only be applied in dry conditions. It shouldn’t be used if rain is expected within 24 hours. A fast-drying product that can be applied even on drizzly days, this Geo-Fix All Weather Paving Joint Compound is one of the best patio grouts if you want a slate grey finish.

Hi Joe, I don’t believe I have used the Sika Pave Fix Plus personally but I’ve just had a read through this product online and I’m not sure on the difference between this and the Sika Fast Fix as upon first glance at least, they look like the same product. After mixing all three components together, the grout can be applied to the joints using a squeegee or brush. If you want something that’s easy to use, the Sika FastFix All Weather Self-Setting Paving Jointing Compound doesn’t require any previous grouting knowledge. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the grout can be applied whatever the weather. It’s perfect for footpaths, patios, pavements and driveways whether you’re repairing existing features or laying new ones. With patio grout you’ll also get a choice of colours, so you can decide if you want the grout to contrast or blend in with your paving .
