About this deal

Whilst you may be eager to repaint the areas where the paint is coming off, chances are, there’s more to come. My advice would be to wait a few months and reassess. At least then the process of removing the paint will be much easier. At that point you’ll want to rub down the entire surface, use a stabiliser and then paint as normal. Unfortunately, it sounds like whoever painted your home didn’t use stabiliser in the first place. Have you ever encountered lime paint on a ceiling? I’ve tried to roll the ceiling and it’s just pulling off in strips. Will a stabilising solution help? Seals walls that are powdery, chalky or dusty prior to repainting exterior masonry. Stable surface for paint to adhere to. Kingfisher “Weatherflex Stabilising Solution” is a solvent-free, fine particle, pure acrylic ester copolymer primer, sealer and stabiliser for masonry. If this be the case then scrape off any loos paint, allow to dry out over a period of a few weeks and paint again. You may well find this is an ongoing process or it may be isolated to one or two problem areas.

Along with using on chalky or dusty surfaces, stabiliser can also be used on surfaces with high absorption. Some render can be highly absorbent and slightly friable due to the type of sand and mix. So it’s the same as sealing a porous wall. This all costs a few quid (depending on area that needs skimming) but will give a great surface to then seal (mist coat) and paint onto Stabilising solution is a great product to use and will increase your walls’ durability whilst preparing them for future paintwork. How annoying is it to prep walls, lining paper drying out nicely then you spot a single piece of grit under the paper that now looks like a huge pimple about to explodeHi, May I suggest for optimum performance that you use TRADE products rather than the retail equivalents. Stabilising solution, when not necessary, can cause walls to lose breathability, and keep natural moisture trapped inside. This moisture will come out eventually, causing your paint to bubble or just flake off. If your exterior walls are chalky or are in less than optimal condition, applying a primer is highly recommended. Each paint manufacturer offers their own primer which they will recommend to use in combination with the masonry paint you opt for. If You Are Using A Specialist Product There are a number of scenarios that can dictate whether to use a priming layer or not. If The Masonry Is Sound

Hi there I am going to paint the exterior of my house but was wondering should I use a sealer/stabiliser before I paint ? The house is around 7 years old and has never been painted. I have sprayed all walls with all in one green algae remover & left it for about 3 days & then power washed it all off so the render is good. What do you think? PJ

With newly rendered surfaces, it is normal to have a certain level of dust and/or powder on the surface as a result of the drying-out process.

You might be able to get away with just sanding the high spots & fill the dents, remove any loose flaking paint then give the whole wall 1 or 2 coats of Everbuild 406 Stablishing liquid (my favourite) other brands available, this will seal the plaster, & bind any loose paintwork & prepare surface ready for decorating. I am about to re-paint some stonework outside my house. It has previously been painted, but in areas it is a little flaky and kind of like white dust build up, think it’s salt or something like that. Furthermore, the stabilising solution and PVA will both act to keep any moisture within the concrete, hence why you experiencing problems. The moisture will force its way out eventually. Kingfisher “Weatherflex Stabilising Solution” is available in 5 litre plastic containers. It should be stored in a cool, dry area, AVOID frost and direct sunlight. Shelf life of the product in, unopened sealed containers is 12 months. For a guy in a shop to be trying to NOT sell you something, he is probably trying to help based on experience. And a rare thing.Looks more like a mortar than a render coat, more or less same ingredients just a different recipe ! This moisture may force itself out eventually and cause the paintwork to bubble and/or subsequently flake-off. Using a stabiliser where not absolutely necessary can impede the performance of any subsequent coats because it isn’t ‘breathable’ and may keep any natural moisture trapped beneath the wall’s surface. I have been having ceilings dropped in my old house . In the hallway, the plasterers had to remove the door frames as they needed to put new plaster from the ceiling to the picture rail due to there being a big bow in the wall. That is all good, but the paint which would have been painted only a couple of years ago before I bought the house, is peeling. I started chipping away at it and removed the paint off one section of the wall. What I now have is an old plaster chalky wall that when you run your fingers along, you have a yellowish dust all over your fingers. The wall has indentations and raised in some areas where someone has previously put a filler or something, (I am not sure what it is) - I am thinking that the wall needs to be skimmed? After reading how to do this, I am not game to give it a go myself. Just so I sound like I know what I am talking about with the Plasterers, what will need to be done before it is skimmed. I get a little nervous that I will be taken advantage of being a single mum.
