Vocals sound natural and come through with clear intelligibility. The HD668B renders voices with just enough warmth that they sound organic but maintain clarity and texture. Now that I have spent more time with the 668B and agree with your assessment they are not in the same class as AKG K701, Denon AH-D500, et al. I will say that they spend more time on my head than those others though, because they are more musically engaging.

The treble has been tamed (which is good) and it's a more dark sounding headphone, quite different tonality to the originals. Regarding 668B they're plenty loud even from portable devices or a laptop. They're about the same as the 681s.
