Wellllll. At least not the kind that you get from spending the day in the sun. There was exactly zero shortage of heat in this book, like I thought I might melt just reading the words.

Brilliant . . . The book is a powerful myth buster. Name a sterotype about violent offenders and Adshead upends it.’For me, this was what pulled me into this book. Yes, there may be common themes which may suggest someone's risk of violence, but there is also an individuality, to each perpetrator, and Dr Adshead will be offering insight into this particular individuality for some of the cases that she has worked on. Lydia appears too well-behaved to be true but Adshead has learned to listen to her intuition as well as her intellect From my perspective it was interesting to reflect on how we fail people early on in their becoming unwell, from not stepping in early enough to help children who have experienced loss or abuse, to mothers whose children enter the care system, and people who have PTSD and need intervention. Again, the institution of slavery was the impetus to the war, but political power was the primary objective. If we’ve learned anything since Emancipation, we know that the North is no better than the South when it comes to racism. I call it the “same whore in a different dress” or “The Devil You Know”.

Coop has so much depth to him, which you wouldn't see on your first interaction, but basically he's so tired of being seen as a playboy. He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, and he adores that T has always known, plus he's always had a softness for he's besties little sister, even though he knows he can never have her. So even though he initially rejects her proposal he finds a way they can both each other: he will "tutor" her during the summer so she's ready for dating life, and she will help him narrow down what he wants to do with his life and help him get ready for classes. We all know they are fighting deeper feelings for one another than they are willing to admit, and I loved how much Coop loved Tatum. He never once made her feel anything less than she deserved and never pressured her for more than she could give, even if it hurt him in the process. Plus she really brought out what was always in him, and made everyone else around them see the potential she always saw. They were just such a cute couple!! Besides my earlier complaints (which like I said, is a very me thing) this was such a sweet brothers best friend romance. I'm hoping we'll get to see a book with T's brother and *her* best friend too! I saw all those sparks flying. Dr Gwen Adshead is one of Britain’s leading forensic psychiatrists. She treats serial killers, arsonists, stalkers, gang members and other individuals who are usually labelled ‘monsters’. Whatever their crime, she listens to their stories and helps them to better understand their terrible acts of violence. Here Adshead invites the reader to step with her into the room to meet twelve patients and discover how minds can change. These men and women are revealed in all their complexity and shared humanity. Their stories make a powerful case for rehabilitation over revenge, compassion over condemnation. The Devil You Know will challenge everything you thought you knew about human nature. We had given him a chance to resolve his inner conflict by caring for him, allowing him to talk about his needs and his anger towards people who had failed him early in his life

In these hospitals the inmates/patients have wide access to services and therapy from the point of admission, where the public and possibly the victims of these offenders (If survived) don't have access to. This is something I can't agree with, and I think it should change to the victims receiving immediate therapy if requested, too. He answers this question: “The possession of real statewide political power in the South could radically alter the architecture of oppression in this country” (p. 113). The Devil You Know is “a helpful introduction for those seeking to make sense of fractious political debates about race and voting rights in the South, and the broken promises of American democracy.” What drives someone to commit an act of terrible violence? Drawing from her thirty years’ experience in working with people who have committed serious offenses, Dr. Gwen Adshead provides fresh and surprising insights into violence and the mind. Through a collaboration with coauthor Eileen Horne, Dr. Adshead brings her extraordinary career to life in a series of unflinching portraits. It’s possible that victim’s families will feel more than a little distressed should they happen to read this section. In another chapter she is dealing with Marcus who murdered his ex-girlfriend because she told him she was going to start dating other men. Professor Adshead also has particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of doctors whose behaviour has caused them to be in conflict with others. She has set up a group called Mindfulness for Doctors, which aims to build resilience in doctors. Her extensive research interests include abnormal illness behaviour, professional ethics and boundaries in mental health, and attachment theory.
