The six friends are chatting and sipping wine (or beer in Chris's case) when Simon arrives at the front door. As fate would have it Simon is a handsome, ripped fellow (in a tight shirt) who's in despair about the loss of his no-good cheating wife. I’m hoping I’ve hit the right balance there,” Janowitz said of her menu, and of her goal to draw universal themes from a Passover dinner comedy. I loved all the descriptions of location and food, and even enjoyed picturing some of the fashion choices. I could definitely relate to a lot of the Jewish factors and understood the humor at certain times throughout. The book had a This is Where I Leave You feel, even though I've only seen the movie. The story begins at a dinner party hosted by Chris and Beth. They are soon joined by their friends Duncan, Sarah, Tony and Marie. The 6 usually have dinner parties once every month. They also have a hosting rota for each of the couples. A tradition that they have maintained for years. However, for the first time, a stranger joins them. Simon was invited by Chris who then forgot to tell the others. He doesn’t really know him but he thought the dinner would cheer him up. Little did the group know that their lives were about to change. All it took was one surprise guest. But it is when Kate leaves home for university that the real trouble begins. Instead of the freedom she expected to feel, life becomes even more complicated.
