Patient testimonials are provided, asserting that SPECT imaging helped them know “exactly” what treatment would help them. One cannot help but wonder whether part of the benefit of SPECT imaging is a placebo effect, boosting the confidence of patients that the treatment they are receiving is personalized and scientifically sound. A similar trend is currently seen more broadly in psychiatry with the widespread promotion of pharmacogenetic testing. Such testing may bolster patient confidence in their medication, but its value in improving patient outcomes has not been established. 1 International guidelines emphasise the importance of high-quality palliative care for everyone at the end of life. This care aims are to make people comfortable rather than to cure their condition. People with severe mental illness who have 12 months or less to live should receive the same palliative care as everyone else.

I understand that books written by scientists are held to a different standard. But this book was a little rough. Healthy Minds with Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein aims to remove the stigma of mental illness and demonstrate that with help, there is hope. The series focuses on common psychiatric conditions through inspiring personal stories, as well as, experts sharing cutting edge information, including new approaches and next-generation therapies in diagnostics, treatment and research. Series is produced by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. Explain why standard treatment may not have helped you or a loved one be healed, or truly healed for the long-term StigmaFree me. Media representations of people with mental illness can influence perceptions and stigma, and they have often been negative, inaccurate or violent representations. A study published in April 2020 looked at a recent example, the popular film Joker (2019), which portrays the lead character as a person with mental illness who becomes extremely violent. The study found that viewing the film "was associated with higher levels of prejudice toward those with mental illness." Additionally, the authors suggest, " Joker may exacerbate self-stigma for those with a mental illness, leading to delays in help seeking." i143373936 |b1220006926340 |dgcrnf |g- |m |h2 |x0 |t2 |i0 |j70 |k220712 |n08-04-2023 20:46 |o- |a616.89 |rAME This book builds on the SPECT-inspired “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” much like Amen’s other works do. I guess that’s to be expected since SPECT scanning is his “thing” and is what he’s based so much of his career on. Alert | How can mental healthcare services meet the needs of people from ethnically diverse groups? A 2019 national poll from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) found that mental health stigma is still a major challenge in the workplace. About half of workers were concerned about discussing mental health issues at their jobs. More than one in three were concerned about retaliation or being fired if they sought mental health care.

Complex PTSD: PTSD that develops after prolonged, repeated trauma (such as long-term sexual or physical abuse) rather than an isolated traumatic event Dr. Amen’s writing at times mischaracterizes psychotropic medications in unhelpful ways. He speaks of psychotropic medications generally as being addictive. While this is certainly true for stimulants and benzodiazepines, most would agree that this does not apply to many other commonly used medications in psychiatry, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers. He also paints with a broad brush when he states that anxiety medications can cause dementia. A concerning link has been demonstrated between benzodiazepine use and dementia, 3 but SSRIs (which are considered first-line medications for anxiety) are not known to cause dementia and may actually delay progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s dementia. 4 His mention of medication use affecting a patient’s insurability could have the unfortunate effect of scaring away suffering individuals from seeking help. The one category of psychiatric medication he does not seem concerned about is psychostimulants, which is odd – given the addictive, cardiovascular, and other risks associated with that medication class. The research team analysed 34 research publications and 28 non-research documents (policy, guidelines and clinical case studies) from 10 countries. They worked with a stakeholder group including policy advisors, specialists in mental health and end-of-life care, and representatives of patients and the public.

Stigma and discrimination can contribute to worsening symptoms and reduced likelihood of getting treatment. A recent extensive review of research found that self-stigma leads to negative effects on recovery among people diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Mental health services are separate from end-of-life services, and there is little overlap. This means that people with severe mental illness might fall through the gaps when it comes to their end-of-life care. Little work has been done to explore this area. Mental health staff might be reluctant to handle end-of-life care for their patients. Staff specialising in end-of-life care might find it difficult to talk with people with severe mental illness. Provided with appropriate doses, because everyone has taken a course on pharmacokinetics and will be responsible enough not to mix 100 different "natural" pills. Wong EC, et al. Effects of stigma and discrimination reduction trainings conducted under the California Mental Health Services Authority. Rand Health Quarterly. 2016;5:9. However, the real problem with this book is the readability. Not only does it not explain important things, it also doesn't lay out how to fix or mitigate certain issues in a sensical manner. Much of the chapter was anecdotes about patients, with very little devoted to why that particular topic was a risk factor and what could be done. On the other hand, each chapter had two or three different ways to explain what could be done, though not in any straightforward manner. This paper highlights the particular inequalities in end of life care for people with severe mental health issues. It is saddening to read that stigma and discrimination remain major barriers to high quality palliative care for these people. The human impact of this is delayed diagnoses, and staff apprehension about talking about death and dying with them which will, no doubt, reduce their chances of having the quality of life they want before they die. An editorial in the Lancet notes that the impacts of stigma are pervasive, affecting political enthusiasm, charitable fundraising and availability, support for local services and underfunding of research for mental health relative to other health conditions.
