Home > even though romance does play a role in this story, it didn't feel so overwhelming as it did in Kelly's book The Light Over London. The garden is front and center in all the plots. Kelly does an accurate job describing various trees, shrubs, and perennials, as well as gardening techniques, such as grafting and cross-pollination; A friend just dropped off “Whispers of War” by the same author so I am looking forward to reading more from this author as well. I was captivated to hear about the lives of five women from 1907, 1944, and 2021 and how they are interwoven around the fictional Highbury House gardens; The calendar of the First Republic was adopted in the autumn of 1793, while the guillotines of the Reign of Terror were still dripping. The first month of the French Republican Calendar would be known as Vendémiaire, named for the grape harvest. Its first day corresponds not to our 1 st of January, but to the autumnal equinox, which fell in their estimation between the 22 nd and the 24 th of September.

The concept of designing a garden, then its restoration is a very original premise. And I was looking forward to those two stories. But I didn’t feel that the designing and restoration process came through in those two stories. They were more absorbed by something else. At the end, the story I expected the least from turned out to be the most interesting. I went to see my neurologist, for the first time since the diagnosis. He told me I’d need a cane within five to eight years. A wheelchair within ten, give or take. Emma’s work was definitely cut out here, but it was so exciting for her to be able to recreate these famous gardens. And you feel, after exertion, like a crash test dummy. You feel like a shit zombie, like a tortured golem. You can’t cry any more – this is still a thing, for some reason – and you’re getting resentful about that, because sometimes you desperately want to. I also enjoyed the Author’s note at the end to give a bit more context as to what was fact vs fiction vs inspiration. I enjoyed that as well. Interwoven are stories of the the owners of the grand estate for the three generations and the events that unfold in those years. Most of the intervening stories are set during the War with some of the staff, land girls, soldiers and friends.

He won’t remember the clue afterwards, but he remembers the word even now. Sees the pen strokes. These details are accurate. Rachel Ip has always loved language and literature. After studying modern languages and linguistics at Cambridge University, she worked in marketing communications for over 10 years, before turning her hand to children's book writing. The Forgettery will be Rachel's second picture book, following The Last Garden. She lives in Hong Kong. He sees himself again, as a child. Sees himself running. Through deep grass and hazed air, towards the bend of a river. It’s June and a blush suffuses everything, a gentle heat. The petals of Iris reticulata are delicate but intensely coloured, rising from a deep indigo at the base to a shimmering cobalt, to a truly miraculous blue. On its sepals, to tempt pollinators, are lavish streaks of saffron yellow. They're extraordinarily brilliant, these markings, like stigmata inflicted by the sunlight itself. About Rachel Ip

An avowed bachelorette at thirty five, Venetia is focused on designing, her love of gardening, and being outdoors. When Mrs. Melcourt insists that Venetia incorporate her brother's roses into the garden plans, Venetia silently seethes but meets with Mr. Goddard as requested. One of my favorite things about this was the garden that tied each woman and their stories together. I listened to the audiobook of The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly on Overdrive. It was brilliantly narrated by Shiromi Arserio, Marisa Calin, Danielle Cohen, Katherine Littrell and Siobhan Waring. This book captured the lives, hopes and desires of five different but very strong women. These women were connected by the lure and love of one very special garden. They lived during three different and distinct time periods. The gardens came to life through these women and influenced, impacted and connected their lives in very different yet similar ways. The cover of The Last Garden in England was beautiful. Julia Kelly masterfully created a touching and heart warming book that boasted impressive research.

I found the tale of the elaborate garden at Highbury House and its evolution over the decades to be interesting too. Not only its evolution, but the work going in to planting, tending and restoring it was fascinating to even a very amateur gardener such as myself. These English gardens are a fascinating piece of history in and of themselves. I didn’t get around to planting that rose, not right away. I dug the hole, though. When you’re planting a rose, you want a hole about twice the size of the root ball. It’s a good idea to dust it with fertiliser. Fish, blood and bone, ideally. Again, gardening is mainly about death. And the avid greens, the immaculate tissues of blossom. With more to come still. More life, more light. Later, it got to be a thing when I was walking. I’d go a mile or two, all brisk pace and cardio virtue, then the wheels would start to come off. It was the same deal as before, but the whole leg was involved now. It had some kind of agenda, this leg. Doubts were emerging about its true loyalties.
