About this deal

Not all the stories are scary, but many of them have at least some creepiness to them, which certainly fits the tone of the drawings and the overall mystery. It made for pretty good Halloween reading, sort of like reading a collection of Ray Bradbury's stories. If you've got younger kids, you may want to preview the book before giving it to them — as with Bradbury's books, a few of these may send a few shivers down your spine, and would be liable to keep my seven-year-old up at night. This original picture book will be a welcome creative writing and storytelling tool for children and adults of all ages.

Give different pairs/groups an illustration or caption from the book (or both) and ask them to collectively write a story. Each picture-and-caption pair is more mysterious and suggestive than the last, and will provide children and adults alike with hours of entertainment.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick - Goodreads

Chris Van Allsburg is one of my must-collect illustrators, as I just love his work. He combines detail with imagination and he has never let me down. While I still rank Queen Of The Falls as his best, this mysterious book of wordless stories comes very close. Have the children use ideas they have written in their notebooks to write stories of their own. When they are finished, ask them to illustrate what they have written. Because of the open interpretation of the pictures, titles, and captions, these are great story starters for students. They can help teach imagination and thinking outside the box when writing a story. I just read the entire Chris Van Allsburg collection today, and I feel that since it was multiple picture books I’ll count them all as one single entry in my reading challenge.Me fascinó como con esto tu imaginación trabaja el doble y empiezas a pensar el por qué de casa situación ocurrida en el libro. De como se llegó a ese punto y de que es lo qué está pasando en realidad. How does the letter Chris Van Allsburg writes to readers affect the way we read the book? How would our experience of reading the book be different if we skipped reading the letter? The only named characters are found in the preface, an introductory letter, in the beginning of the book. There are many different characters in the pictures but none of their names are given. Model for your students either on the overhead or on chart paper how you might go about beginning a list of story ideas. “I might ask myself, ‘What ideas have been bouncing around in my head lately that I haven’t had a chance to write?'” you may say — thinking aloud so your students can observe the process you are going through. Write a couple of ideas, modeling how you don’t necessarily need to write complete sentences when you are making notes to yourself. “A boy finds magic shoes in his grandmother’s attic — they make it so he can jump over trees.” “A little girl’s collection of plastic farm animals comes to life after midnight.” Use your own story-starter ideas to inspire your students to think creatively when recording their own ideas.
