About this deal

Perhaps it was he who sang so prettily for me in the summer,” she thought. “How much pleasure he gave me, the dear, beautiful bird!” This is Hans Christian Andersen‘s classic fairy tale ‘Thumbelina’. The story of a tiny girl who sleeps in a walnut. When she is stolen away by an ugly toad she begins her adventure across the lands. She meets many creatures, some good, some bad that take advantage of her sweet nature. Finally she is rescued by a beautiful swallow who will help her find her destined happiness. Even though she was small Thumbelina was very curious, and one day she started investigating the magical world around her. Soon she met an evil frog she wanted to marry her for her son. Thumbelina did not want to spend her life next to that frog, so she ran away into the woods. She was kind, and it did not take long before the forest animals started to love her.

There, in the middle of its petals, stood a little prince, a gold crown on his head. He was as fine and delicate as Thumbelina herself. Shining wings sprouted from his shoulders. He was the king of the flower people. In every flower a tiny person lived, and he was the king of them all. Thumbelina heard over and over again how handsome and rich the mouse's friend was, and eventually this friend dug a tunnel from their house to his. He was a mole. But ‘Croak croak, brek-kek-kex,’ was all the toad’s son said when he saw Thumbelina. ‘Shhh! Don’t speak so loudly. You might wake her,’ his mother said. ‘We must put her somewhere where she cannot escape. I know,’ she said, when she had thought for a time. ‘I’ll put her on a water lily out in the stream.’

On March 30, 1994, Warner Brothers released the animated film Thumbelina (1994), [12] directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, with Jodi Benson as the voice of Thumbelina. How do you think Thumbelina feels when she is told she needs to marry the mole? What makes you think that? How do you think you would have felt in this situation? A tiny but beautiful girl grows from a barleycorn which has been enchanted by a witch. She is found when a woman kisses the petal on the flower and she is named Thumbelina on account of her size. She is kidnapped by a toad who wants her to marry her son and is left on a lily pad. Fish rescue her by gnawing the lily pad loose so that it floats downstream but Thumbelina is once again snatched away, this time by a beetle. She is later abandoned by the beetle, after other beetles convince him that Thumbelina is ugly because she is not like them.

She was pleased with Thumbelina, so she said, “You are quite welcome to stay with me all the winter, if you like; but you must keep my rooms clean and neat, and tell me stories, for I shall like to hear them very much.” And Thumbelina did all that the field mouse asked her, and found herself very comfortable. The two fall instantly in love, and get married. The fairy king does not like the name "Thumbelina". Don’t speak so loud, or she will wake,” said the toad, “and then she might run away, for she is as light as swan’s-down. We will place her on one of the water-lily leaves out in the stream; it will be like an island to her, she is so light and small, and then she cannot escape; and while she is there we will make haste and prepare the stateroom under the marsh, in which you are to live when you are married.” On 2021, at the New York International Children's Film Festival, premiered the short film Tulip, a contemporary version on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale Thumbelina . Live action [ edit ] Brian Alderson, the British children's author and critic, whose many folkloric projects have included the editing of Andrew Lang's color fairy books, as well as a collection of Hans Christian Andersen's tales ( The Swan's Stories), here turns his attention to the classic story of a tiny girl, no bigger than a thumb. The trials and tribulations of Thumbelina (Tommelise in the original Danish) - kidnapped by toads, set adrift on a river, seized by maybugs, almost forced to marry a pompous old mole - are all here, as is the appropriately happy ending.
