About this deal

In many instances, it’s merely a case of turning down the volume of one instrument to give another space to breathe, and it’s heartening to see the return of Helen O’Hara, credited alongside Rowland and remix producer Pete Schwier, to ensure her violin parts are treated more sympathetically. Elsewhere, the penny whistle intro to Until I Believe In My Soul has been ditched in favour of the same passage played by trombonist Jim Paterson, a more atmospheric, mournful preface to the song’s introspective testifying.

Norwegiancharts.com – Kevin Rowland & Dexys Midnight Runners – Too-Rye-Ay". Hung Medien. Retrieved 1 February 2022. To tie in with the 40th anniversary of their multi-platinum selling second album, Dexy’s Midnight Runners present Too-Rye-Ay “as it should have sounded”: a new edition of the landmark record, which will be out on October 14 through UMC. Before "Come On Eileen", Dexys' only North American single was the Northern Soul classic "Seven Days Too Long", which Dexys' previous label EMI America had released only in Canada (with "Geno" as the B-side). However, on the strength of "Come On Eileen", Too-Rye-Ay reached number 14 in the US. [12] Dexys' success in US was not maintained; the best performer of the band's follow-up singles in the US was "The Celtic Soul Brothers", which peaked at number 86. [12] Universal Music will issue 40th anniversary editions of Dexys Midnight Runners 1982 album Too-Rye-Ay in October. Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge. The 2002 US CD reissue features the single version of "Come On Eileen" instead of the album version (which removes the fiddle intro). I didn’t mind so much when we played live, because I was in complete charge of the music and I knew we could give people a good show; when it came to performance I would just focus on what audiences were about to hear, not what they’d heard already. But I felt bad promoting it in the press, and even years later when talking to friends. They’d say, “Oh, I listened to Too-Rye-Ay again last night,” and my heart would sink a bit. All the songs on the album were rearranged to add strings, which caused Dexys to re-record the 1981 singles "Plan B", "Liars A to E", and "Soon". During the rearrangement process, "Soon" was revised into the opening section of "Plan B"; since both songs were written by Rowland and Paterson, the merged songs are credited on the album simply as "Plan B". To make Too-Rye-Ay sound as it should, Dexys turned to a close associate, their long-time producer/engineer Pete Schwier who re-evaluated all the songs and made some cogent suggestions for sonic improvements. She was really good when it came to correcting the balance of the strings on stuff like Liars A To E, turning the organ down so that the violins came to life more. Basically, she helped rectify my mistakes. What hasn’t changed a jot is the album’s ability to floor the listener with its passion, its articulacy and its wealth of ideas. Rowland’s blend of the confessional and the keenly observed is couched in a musical palette of striking ambition, a work where every note earns its place in the bigger picture.I knew there were other songs on there just as good as ‘Eileen’, but they hadn’t been realised properly. The album has been masterfully reworked and remixed by Kevin Rowland, Pete Schwier and original violinist Helen O’ Hara. The album will be released in this brand new way and sound next year via Universal on various formats and the band will head out on the road to perform the album in full with other Dexys favourites live at a venue near you. Dexys are heading on a UK tour, coinciding with a reworking of their classic album, Too Rye Ay, as it should have sounded, in what will be the 40 th Anniversary of the original album. Staunton, Terry (November 2007). "Dexys Midnight Runners – Too Rye Ay". Record Collector (342) . Retrieved 15 June 2016. The songs and performances are great, but I always felt the mixes could be better. It’s my most successful album, but it doesn’t sound as good as the others. This is the director’s cut and it’s how it should have sounded…“

Raggett, Ned. "Too-Rye-Ay – Kevin Rowland / Dexys Midnight Runners". AllMusic . Retrieved 15 June 2016.The reissues feature a newly mixed version of the record, dubbed the ‘as it should have sounded’ version. This is because Kevin Rowland was apparently “never happy” with the final mix, despite its success (the album reached #2 in the UK and #14 in the US). He says the following:

You suggest that it sounds punchier now – but that’s only half the story, as it has a lot more dynamics and a lot more emotional depth. It sounds a lot more pure for want of a better term,” he says. “It’s a very musical mix. It lets the vocals breathe, and also we were able to deal with a few of the studio treatments and production techniques. They were of their time, but I didn’t like them, and they didn’t reflect the dynamic range of the music.” Want to be the first to know all things live music, comedy and entertainment?
