The entire year was spent lying on my bathroom floor in my own tears, blood and vomit as I did my best to survive each night. I’m not really sure what motivated me. It could’ve been the people around me such as my partner at the time or my incredibly worried mother or just the hope that maybe, just maybe things will get better. But this is an album about not just a long distance relationship, but a long distance breakup, and right now I’m going through neither, and I haven’t in well over a year.

The new Car Seat Headrest album, Twin Fantasy, is a completely re-recorded version of an album that Toledo originally released in 2011. There’s not much precedent for this sort of do-over—if this were film, say, it’d be like Steven Soderbergh re-making Sex, Lies and Videotape, which I could actually see him doing at some point. But Toledo, two years after his last batch of new songs, apparently believes enough in this album to think that he can make a better version of it to share with the wider world.

On January 9, 2018, Matador officially announced the release of the re-recording, entitled Twin Fantasy (Face to Face), alongside a tour announcement and a music video for the single "Nervous Young Inhumans" . [11] The album was released via Matador on February 16, as previously announced. The original recording, re-titled to Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror), was released on vinyl as a part of Record Store Day on April 21.

Today I’m returning to this album after quite a while of not listening to it, at least in full. I’ve of course listened to certain songs such as Bodys, Famous Prophets and of course Beach Life-in-Death plenty, but sitting down and listening to the film 71 minutes? I haven’t really done it, at least not in recent memory. Will Toledo always knew he would return to Twin Fantasy. He never did complete the work. Not really. Never could square his grand ambitions against his mechanical limitations. Listen to his first attempt, recorded at nineteen on a cheap laptop, and you’ll hear what Brian Eno fondly calls “the sound of failure” - thrilling, extraordinary, and singularly compelling failure. This is less a review about the album and music itself but more what it represents. To me, and to so many others this album is more than just a gay breakup album. It's a sad commentary when the best album of the year IMO is just a re-recording of an album from 7 years prior. If I were Will Toledo, I never would have remade Twin Fantasy, but I understand why he did. My copy has quite a lot of surface noise, and the sound quality feels really subpar in most of the songs compared to the digital version. a vital record for sad gay furries it's a record i wish i could say was perfect. they're all good songs, many are even amazing, and the performances are all top notch. its overall message and many of the moment-to-moment details are deeply resonating for me, "Sober to Death" in particular. i'm certain that if i had heard this record in my teens and earlier 20's, it would've had me sobbing.
