About this deal

As prevention is certainly better than cure in this case, for any plumbing joints that are hidden or hard to reach such as those being kitchen units, it’s not a bad idea to add some PTFE tape to ensure no leaks occur at any point in the future as in most cases you’ll never find a leaking joint until the damage has already been done. A few wraps of thread sealant tape is all it takes to make a leak-free connection! If you follow these steps, you’ll find that Teflon tape is a breeze to use and does its job well.

Chemical inert, so it won’t react with other elements. That makes it ideal for applications where solvents, gases, or acids may be lurking.

Where Should PTFE Tape be Used?

Other names for Teflon tape include plumber’s tape, PTFE tape, pipe tape, or thread tape. All of these names refer to the same thing, which is most widely known as “Teflon” tape. Take the end of your plumber’s tape and place it on the second thread from the pipe’s end. Hold it there with your finger or thumb. The tape should sit flat over the threads and not bunch up. Extend it perpendicularly to the length of the pipe. Find out how to measure plumbing pipe size easily and accurately with our free tool. This handy ruler will save you money and frustration! Screw joints together: Run your finger over the loose end of the PTFE tape and push it down into the threads to prevent it coming out when you start screwing the joint up. With the tape fully secured you can at this point apply a little jointing compound if you wish to fully hold the tape down and also add an additional layer of leak prevention. Gently screw the joint up taking care not to loosen the tape until the joint is screwed up hand tight and then pinch it up using a spanner (don’t over tighten as this can cause the joint to fail)

White Teflon tape comes in a single density. It’s made for water pipes that measure ? inches or less. You can also find it in silver color, on occasion, which is made to match the color of the pipe. Red Tape Keep tension on the tape, ensuring that it is snugly wrapped around the pipe. As you overlap the tape, work gradually away from the end of the pipe to completely cover the threads. As we have discussed above, PTFE tape can be used on pretty much any domestic water-based plumbing system to help prevent the potential of any future leaks forming. It can also be used to help seal up fuel systems that include oil, petrol and diesel and also with gas systems, but you have to use the correct PTFE tape specifically for use with gas. If you have ever done any plumbing work or worked on an existing water system in a home e.g. changed a tap chances are that at some point you will have come across some PTFE tape wrapped around a given joint and possibly wondered why it was there. Use plumber’s tape to seal male pipe fitting threads. Male pipe fittings are the pieces that screw into another piece, which is called a female pipe fitting. Always put plumber’s tape on the male threads before screwing them into the female threads. [1] X Research sourceApplying Teflon tape may seem simple enough, but since it has no adhesive properties, you have to make sure you wrap it in the right direction and in the right spot or you could end up with a balled-up mess. Here the steps to follow to wrap PTFE tape properly and get a leak-free seal. For plumbers, PTFE tape is essential when sealing up pipe threads before making connections. But, thanks to its many properties, there are many professional and casual uses for it. Not only is PTFE tape a fantastic sealant, due to the very low-friction nature of the tape it makes it very slippery which in turn makes it a fantastic lubricant on and around joints.
