About this deal

In terms of operational speed, we found it difficult to separate the IronWolf Pro and EXOS 20TB in our benchmarking. I found a hard drive to be very efficient, and for some reason works faster than my 1 TB of the same maker and brand. It is also quieter than the 1 TB that my system came with. In fact the fan on my DVR makes more noise than a hard drive does and I have a quiet fan.

For the customer, the choice is between the biggest drives available, allowing the largest possible arrays, or spreading the workload between less expensive drives with potentially increased levels of redundancy. Why in the UK the HC560 is cheaper than the WD Gold is curious, and the Red Pro is the most expensive in the UK of all drives. SSDs are expensive, and HDDs are cheaper when you are looking for more storage. SSDs are suitable for operating systems, but when you need an external drive to store loads of data, nothing is better than an HDD with huge storage capacity. On paper, 20 TB sound like a fantastic innovation. Using just 20 TB drives, you could have 100 TB of available storage space with just six drives in your Unraid server. But Linus, from the Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel, has a compelling argument against increasing the size of hard drives from where they currently are. This Is a 3.5 drive, so be sure that it will fit your console or whatever you are placing it in. It's important that people know this is not a standard drive and is made for surveillance cameras, or something that is access to an overridden on a regular basis. Unlike a standard hard drive in your PC that has correction control most of these drives for the surveillance systems do not have correction. Meaning once it copies the data there is no verification that the data was copied correctly. Why this is not usually a problem on a system is a good hard drive and a smooth running operating system it could result in data loss. That is why it is advised to buy a surveillance hard drive, something that is specifically made to run off and and to keep copying the files without correction. This design is exclusively a SATA 6GB/s connected drive, and can be used in any PC or NAS that accepts SATA drives of that spec. Thunderbolt 3 technology was introduced a year ago, but still, there are many users of Thunderbolt 2. This technology wiped out Fibre Channel DAS and offered professionals a new way to access high-speed and high-capacity storage. Thunderbolt offers superior features to USB connectivity which isn’t expensive as 10 GB Ethernet. This connectivity was first introduced on a limited number of PC motherboards designed for audio and video professionals. Still, over time, the high-bandwidth technology made it’s way to other motherboards as well. While buying an external hard drive for your needs, you need to ensure that you are getting a device that helps to store your data safely. The most important thing to consider is its reliability, as you don’t like to buy an external hard drive which fails on you and causes you to lose all your important data. There is one aspect to the IronWolf Pro 20TB that concerns us, and it’s the 300TB per year workload definition.

Another advantage that you can get from this drive is it’s USB 3.1 2 nd Gen interface. You can expect faster data transfers due to its x2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. Moreover, it also comes with an HDMI port to offer 4K and HDR video streaming. You can easily store large files like 4K videos at a lightning-fast speed. If you are looking to get a simple network storage solution for your home, then this is one of the great options available on the market. It is specifically designed for people who are just getting started with network storage and don’t want to mess around with all the options and settings you get on a full-fledged NAS drive. Seagate brought its 20TB products to market alongside Western Digital, eliminating any special bragging rights on this scale of drive. When we first saw these numbers, they sounded reasonable because the workload value isn’t like a TBW number on an SSD, as the 300TB is for each year of operation up to five years. The SATA EXOS comes either with Standard or SED FastFormat, and the SAS model adds SED-FIPS to those options. Toshiba continues to work closely with the cloud companies to understand their capacity and performance requirements, and the ability to utilize our next-generation technologies will be key to meeting our customers’ needs,” said Ragfhu Gururangan, VP Engineering and Product Marketing at Toshiba America. Buying an external hard drive for your needs includes figuring out the space needed to store data. You don’t want to get an external hard drive that is too small, and you don’t get enough space to store your data safely. Nowadays, most people are increasingly looking for a perfect storage solution to store large amounts of personal data. Western Digital has offered a perfect solution to many people’s storage issues. WD My Book Duo hard drive comes with USB 3.1 connectivity and a huge capacity to store loads of data efficiently. One surprise was that considering the performance improvements, we had expected the 20TB drive to pull more power and generate more heat.

Another difference is that the EXOS 20TB comes in both SATA and SAS connections, whereas the IronWolf Pro is exclusively SATA. If you set the drive on RAID 1 or mirror mode, your computer will deal with it as a single drive with half the storage. You will also face slower performance because your computer will only write to one drive. This attracts creative professionals like musicians or videographers who capture moments regularly that can never be recreated. The third mode is JBOD. You can choose this one, and your PC will see the 2Big as two individual drives. Should the drive fail after exceeding these workload limits, Seagate can reject warranty replacement accordingly. LaCie is a company popular for it’s Thunderbolt storage. No other company has offered as many different models with this technology. The LaCie 5Big comes with a traditional pedestal form factor that can fit nicely under a desk. This hard drive uses Marvell hardware RAID technology, and you can align the disks in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 arrays or go for a simple JBOD configuration. Moreover, users can also configure more than one array in the system.

An Enterprise-class 20TB NAS drive

As drives get even bigger, this could become the limiting factor, not the innovative ways that drive makers find to squeeze more bytes onto them. Competitors A problem that we noted when covering the IronWolf is that for the sanity of those maintaining the data centre, regular array inspections are carried out to make sure the integrity of the data stored on them is good. Evidently, both Seagate and Western Digital did the calculations and came to the same conclusion about these devices and how much use they are likely to handle before they need replacing.

If you are reading this review and are already bored with the numbers, we apologise in advance. Because this drive is all about the numbers, the good, bad and ugly. Alongside its IronWolf Pro, Seagate also makes a 20TB EXOS design that we’ll be covering shortly, aimed at the same slice of the Enterprise market that the UltraStar DC HC560 was created.I would never use 20 TB drives to store my photography, videography, or any work-related files for the reasons listed above. If one of those hard drives was to fail, and I had all my work on it, I would have to wait two days or more, just to be able to find out if everything still was there. Were there two 10 TB hard drives instead of a single 20 TB hard drive and one of them would die, there would be a 50% chance that the file I was looking was still accessible. And if it wasn’t, rebuilding the dead hard drive would only take a day. But working the maths a little, taking 300TB and multiplying that by the five years of warranty yields an operational guaranteed limit of 1500TB. Divide that by the capacity, and the total bytes transferred is only 75TB per TB of capacity. In a physical hard drive, as the EXOS is, wear happens whenever the platters are rotating, irrespective of the reading or writing that accompanies that movement. The complete reading of the drive for an integrity test once a week would use up 1,040TB per year, nearly twice the yearly limit, and that’s without any operational use.
