About this deal

many jungle sequences have greater range and nuance. Explosions from gunfire and, well, explosives also offer a somewhat more lustrous orange

an outing which some fans may have felt seemed deliberately designed to evoke another iconic science fiction franchise, Alien: 6 Film Collection. There are a lot of nice ideas hiding in the murkiness of the screen play, and on the surface the film has everything it needs to succeed in the action genre. But so significant are the changes wrought upon the original cut, that you can tell that there are bits missing, there is so little coherence to the narrative that whilst you don’t get lost, the plot holes just stand out and bring you out of the film. The characters, this time around, are just unlikeable, the dialogue is lamentable and so full of profanity it becomes ridiculous; it is just so hard to get behind the film in any way. At least it does deliver on the action front; it was made and marketed are an R-rated feature and it does deliver on that front, no matter how daft the execution.

There was no ghosting when we gamed on the VG289Q, and overdrive successfully helped eliminate motion blur. SDR titles looked extra colorful, but there was hardly any improvement when moving over to HDR games. That failure probably accounts for the fact that it took decades for the "next" Predator film to appear, 2010's Predators,

At that price, the frame itself needs to be flawless. Of course, if you’ve got monitor arms, you can drop that entirely and instead opt for something a little more serious, thanks to the VESA 100x100 support, but otherwise it absolutely looks the part. The audio is available in the same 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix found on the previous Blu-ray edition. It features good dynamic range, muscular bass, a wide and enveloping soundstage, strong directional play, smooth panning, and clear dialogue. Alan Silvestri’s score is presented with satisfying fidelity. True, there’s no object-based mix, but I’m not sure what one might add to the experience. This mix is plenty solid and represents the film well. There’s also an English theatrical mix in 4.0 DTS-HD Master Audio available, along with 5.1 Dolby Digital in Spanish, Czech, and Polish, and 5.1 DTS in French, Castilian, German, and Italian. Optional subtitles are included in English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Spanish, French, Castilian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, two Chinese dialects, Czech, and Polish.

included the Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-ray as its 1080p offering in this set, something that will probably be seen as a disappointment, even if tone in this version, and the highlights of the "Predator vision" moments gain new force as well. Some of the heavily graded and/or "stylishly" lit

Info

A propulsive, lean thriller, which efficiently mounts the tension over its first act before a second act full of surprises and a finale that the whole feature was building towards, Prey is hard to fault, seeming at once completely unlike any previous Predator sequel yet also a strangely natural successor to them (not only the original, but also the nods at the end of the second film, which emphasised that the intergalactic hunters had been 'visiting' Earth for many centuries before Dutch first encountered them). As a lifelong fan of this franchise I am admittedly biased. Since the revolutionary classic first film, Fox/hollywood have made 4 sequels all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed/ still critiqued. A perfect sequel hasn't been made imo and may never be, but I can say this new film has the closest effective wilderness ambience/suspense to the first film and that warrants great praise.

Inside the Predator – A series of 7 featurettes covering various aspects of the films, titled: Inside the Predator, Classified Action, The Unseen Arnold, Old Painless, The Life Inside, Camouflage, Welcome to the Jungle and finally Character Design. Outside of pricey OLED TVs, nothing really compares to it. Side-by-side next to a fairly high caliber 32-inch IPS 4K display from Viewsonic, the HDR mode of the AU Optronics panel runs rings around it. Everything seems more alive, and it almost gives it a surreal 3D feel to it, as if could almost touch it. The line between pixel and man is certainly fading. Verdict Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080p Blu-ray. It's important to also note that the 1080p Blu-ray disc included with this release is Predator: Evolution of a Species: Hunters of Extreme Perfection – 11 minute feature sees producer John Davis and filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal discussing the franchises popularity. Praise the maker! We can finally consign the 2010 Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-ray, with its waxy, DNR'd horrific image, to the bin where it rightfully belongs

Conclusion

As a whole, this Predator 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is a vast improvement over any previous home video release - but it has unfortunate issues that simply can't be fixed, only mitigated. This was always going to be a problematic release but I have to hand it to Fox for doing a decent job. It's not perfect, but fans will be pleased to know it's much better than what's come before. Predators 4K. And while there may indeed be at least a bit of salvation with regard to the first Predator film's 4K release (in terms of previous
