About this deal

We help clients develop the ability to step out of problem-solving mode altogether and into the psychological space of mindfulness and acceptance. This is useful whenever (a) problems cannot be solved, or (b) when problem-solving attempts create even bigger problems. The aim is to provide a guide for anyone who might have to make decisions in a person's best interests if that person has lost the capacity to make decisions or communicate their decision. If you know that you may have to go into hospital at some point, you can tell people how you'd like to be treated in advance. There are different ways to do this, and you may have to fill in forms. Find out how it works and who can help you with the legal bits.

Both an EPA and LPA must be registered. An LPA can be registered at any time, but a personal welfare LPA will only be effective once the person has lost the capacity to make their own decisions. where they would like to be cared for – for example, at home or in a hospital, nursing home or hospice Once you’ve helped your client identify a value, they have an indicator to follow on their journey. It's important that you know what happens to you when you're detained, what your rights are, and where you can seek help. If you don’t know what a value is, just think of one word that describes how you want to behave now and on an ongoing basis. We use language both externally to communicate and internally to think. ACT clinicians understand and help alter how clients use language internally. Committed action is the most visible behavior change aspect of ACT since it occurs in the external world, in the here and now. Once clients have identified their values, they commit to taking actions that will allow them to live in alignment with those values. ACT regards the mind as a double-edged sword. It's very useful for all sorts of purposes, but if we don't learn how to handle it effectively, it will hurt us. If you feel better, by all means enjoy it. But please, consider it a bonus, not the main intention.”

When we accept our feelings, they may or may not reduce in intensity. We can’t predict it. But we can predict this: when we try to control or avoid our feelings, it’s very likely that they’ll increase in intensity and cause us more distress.” There is no time to control our behavior but the present moment, although our minds often take us to the past and future to ruminate on mistakes or make plans. The Human Rights Act gives you legal protection of your human rights, such as your right to life, or your right to a fair trial. An advance statement is a written statement that sets down a person's preferences, wishes, beliefs and values regarding their future care. It's not legally binding. I’m committed to helping you create the best life you can possibly have. And if I sit here and say nothing, then I’ll be neglecting those values.” Then with an attitude of openness and curiosity, defused from any judgments or criticisms, we describe the behavior we’re noticing and point to the fact that it’s preventing useful work in the session. From there, we may explore the function of the behavior - “Can I ask what you’re hoping to achieve by doing X?” As Harris (2006) suggested, ACT helps clients embrace their demons and follow their hearts. Acceptance is the aspect of the hexaflex that corresponds to the first part of that phrase: embracing your demons. In ACT, ‘demons’ are a metaphor for any unwanted private experience. New rights for carers which put them on the same footing as the people they care for. All carers are be entitled to an assessment. If a carer is eligible for support for particular needs, they have a legal right to receive support for those needs, just like the people they care for

Sheri Turrell, PhD, clinical psychologist working with teens and adults in Toronto, ON, Canada; Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) peer-reviewed ACT trainer; and coauthor of ACT for Adolescents and The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Teen Anxietyavoid discrimination – do not make assumptions on the basis of age, appearance, condition or behaviour They'll come into action when the court needs to delegate an ongoing series of decisions rather than one decision. Greater regulation for those who provide professional care and support, and tougher penalties for those who do not provide care and support of a high enough standard Who wouldn’t benefit from being more psychologically present; more in touch with their values; more able to make room for the inevitable pain of life; more able to defuse from unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and memories; more able to take effective action in the face of emotional discomfort; more able to engage fully in what they’re doing; and more able to appreciate each moment of their life, no matter how they’re feeling? Psychological flexibility brings all of these benefits, and more. ACT therefore seems relevant to just about everyone.” (pp. 30-31)
