About this deal

When sociologists Dennis and Michele Waskul interviewed ghost experiencers for their book " Ghostly Encounters: The Hauntings of Everyday Life" (Temple University Press, 2016 ) they found that "many participants were not sure that they had encountered a ghost and remained uncertain that such phenomena were even possible, simply because they did not see something that approximated the conventional image of a 'ghost.' Instead, many of our respondents were simply convinced that they had experienced something uncanny — something inexplicable, extraordinary, mysterious, or eerie."

The paranormal refers to events or phenomena that cannot be explained by normal scientific understanding. Examples include things like telepathy and spiritualism, as well as pseudosciences like ghost-hunting and cryptozoology (an attempt to prove the existence of mythical creatures). What does supernatural mean? How does Coach Brody convince Ghost to join the Defenders? How does he convince Ghost’s mom? How hard is it to balance athletics and academics? What leads to Ghost’s decision to steal a pair of running shoes? Why does he feel like stealing is his only option? What are the short- and long-term consequences of his decision? What would you have done if you were in his position? What could Ghost have done instead? What lesson does he learn as a result?

The supernatural refers to supposed phenomena that exist outside the laws of nature, such as angels, demons and gods. What’s the difference between paranormal and supernatural? In addition to training the Defenders to be competitive runners, Coach also teaches them to work together as a team, helping them learn to be responsible and empathetic. What tactics does he use to teach these life lessons? Being Scottish means that you are always surrounded by the paranormal because it's one of the most mythological and haunted countries on earth, and I certainly have had my share of strange/inexplicable phenomena happen to me. There's some stuff I don't even think about because it's too weird, I'm sure I'll accidentally find myself on the other side of one of these shows one day. Personal experience is one thing, but scientific evidence is another matter. Part of the difficulty in investigating ghosts is that there is not one universally agreed-upon definition of what a ghost is. Some believe that they are spirits of the dead who for whatever reason get "lost" on their way to The Other Side; others claim that ghosts are instead telepathic entities projected into the world from our minds. Classics of Greek literature like Homer's 'Odyssey' and 'Iliad' both feature ghosts. However, these ghosts rarely interacted with the living, and were not depicted as daunting beings; occasionally, they were invoked to provide prophecy or advice.

In the medieval Europe there were generally two types of ghosts reported: the souls of the dead, or demons. The former had a specific purpose, whereas the latter's sole existence was to tempt and torment the living. To distinguish between the two, it was believed that the living could invoke the name of Jesus Christ and demand the ghost's purpose. The soul of a dead person would reveal its purpose, whereas a demonic ghost would be exiled upon hearing Jesus's name. If someone hands you an electronic device to sense aghost, then they’re probably doing it to get your money during aghosttour," Hupp said. I think the Miss Howard case is the one that feels the most unsettling because every time you think you have understood it, it simply shifts direction and evolves into something more. We have our most vivid dreams during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Our eyes dart around under closed eyelids and the rest of our bodies are paralysed. Sleep paralysis is the feeling of being conscious but unable to move - as if dreaming with eyes open - and occurs when a person moves through stages of wakefulness and sleep. It's a frightening experience, and can feel like someone is in your room. Pareidolia

The series begins on Friday 13th…have you ever had any odd experiences on that day? What is so spooky about it? In ancient Egypt , the soul and the spirit were thought to survive after death, with the potential to help or harm the living. There was even the possibility of a second death. Lots of these beliefs were recorded in hieroglyphs and tomb paintings.

Working with a group, try to translate Ghost into film. Which aspects of the book would translate especially well to film (ex. dialogue, setting, character, conflict)? You may choose to create a book trailer for the novel or adapt a scene in the book into a screenplay and film it. But let me tell you, my dad was lying. Wasn’t no sunflowers growing in him. Couldn’t have been. I don’t know a whole lot about sunflowers, but I know they’re pretty and girls like them, and I know the word sunflower is made up of two good words, and that man ain’t got two good words in him, or anything that any girl would like, because girls don’t like men who try to shoot them and their son. And that’s the kind of man he was. On a visit to the White House shortly after World War II, Winston Churchill claimed to have met the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. Completely naked, Churchill supposedly said, “Good evening, Mr President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage,” before the spirit smiled and vanished. There are plenty of misunderstood phenomena that influenceghostsightings. For example, sleep paralysis in a recognized experience that leads to people feeling like they have seen aghost, demon, or alien," Hupp said. Thus, many people who go on record as claiming to have had a ghostly experience didn't necessarily see anything that most people would recognize as a classic "ghost," and in fact they may have had completely different experiences whose only common factor is that it could not be readily explained.

For instance, some claim that support for the existence of ghosts can be found in no less a hard science than modern physics. It is widely claimed that Albert Einstein suggested a scientific basis for the reality of ghosts, based on the First Law of Thermodynamics: If energy cannot be created or destroyed but only change form, what happens to our body's energy when we die? Could that somehow be manifested as a ghost? Uncanny is the TV incarnation of a podcast I have been making for the BBC for the last two years. It features real people telling me about experiences they’ve had that they feel could be paranormal. Each episode features a new story, told by the person it happened to; ordinary people who have experienced the extraordinary. I guess the major difference between us and pretty much any other paranormal show out there is that our audience is divided equally between believers and sceptics. There are detective stories – if you are a sceptic, it’s a howdunnit, you can try to figure out if you think the ‘haunting’ could have been caused by environmental or psychological factors, and if you are a believer, it’s a whodunnit – you want to know who is the ghost and why are they there. Ghosts featured in Mesopotamian religions, and traces of these beliefs influence the subsequent Abrahamic religions that have shaped the modern world. Ghosts were believed to come into existence at the time of death, taking on the personality and memory of the deceased. I think there’s an enduring interest, over centuries really. How could there not be? It’s the biggest question in the history of the universe – what happens to us when we die? It’s the mystery that every religion ever founded has set out to provide an answer for. But I also think there are some very definite reasons why there is a particular boom in interest in ghosts and the paranormal right now. We’ve been living through strange, chaotic, uncertain times, which forces us to think about our mortality in a way we probably haven’t done since the Second World War. It’s interesting, after both World Wars, there were huge spikes in interest in the paranormal, and I think we’re seeing one now for similar reasons. When the world is a scary, confusing place, we search for answers in another world, and when we are confronted by death, the idea that it is not the end feels deeply attractive. Ghost hunters use many creative (and dubious) methods to detect the spirits' presences, often including psychics. Virtually all ghost hunters claim to be scientific, and most give that appearance because they use high-tech scientific equipment such as Geiger counters, Electromagnetic Field (EMF) detectors, ion detectors, infrared cameras and sensitive microphones. Yet none of this equipment has ever been shown to actually detect ghosts.
