My review sample had an unusual frequency range: 140 – 160 MHz and 430 – 441 MHz. Because my sample came directly from Sainsonic’s head office, I think that this particular radio was originally intended for another region. It’s not really important; if you want a wider range you can set other boundaries by software. My advice to a novice is that if you aren’t completely committed to this hobby and prepared to put in extra patience to work out programming kinks, you will be saving quite a bit of money buying the BaoFeng GT-3TP. GT-3TP Mark-III has High / Med / Low Power Settings Broad (Wide) / Narrowband (Narrow), High power / low power (5W / 1W), selectable. Selectable Frequency Step: 2.5/5/6.25/10/12.5/25 kHz. Big buttons & knob: GT-3TP has a built-in PTT key, CALL key, and MONI key on the left side of the radiono_content": "This section doesn’t currently include any content. Add content to this section using the sidebar." Antenna Interface: Fine copper antenna connector outperforms previous antenna connectors and improves communications. It also comes with upgraded Antenna connector, Radio Frequency IC, FM Receiver Chip, Power Amplifier IC, etc. High Power: Maximize the 8W output power of the Baofeng GT-3TP handheld ham radio to get extended range and increased clarity during transmission. Another low and mid-range power is available to help extend battery life. NOTE 1: Radios marked with an asterisk (*) were supported in the legacy builds of CHIRP, but have not yet been validated in CHIRP-next. See ChirpNextBuild for details. Please open a bug to report whether or not these work for you.

The manual programming isn’t the most intuitive and some functions simply do not work as the instructions claim. This is all something that an experienced user who has dealt with CHIRP software can easily overcome. Upgraded Antenna: The 21cm high gain antenna has better stability and performance compared to the old antenna. Combined with 8W high output power, the dual band two-way radio can even extend the talking range up to 11km. This is what everyone likes about these radios: more power. A standard UV-5R or GT-3 will deliver around 4 Watts on VHF and 3 Watts on UHF. Note: those few extra Watts won’t help you much if you want to extend your range. Range depends for 99% on other factors, such as terrain and antenna height. The battery will drain much faster though. So yeah, not at all happy at this point. But then something funny happened, I started using the Baofeng GT-3TP and found it was actually a pretty good radio!
