Holding the camera is a little fiddly because the EOS 450D's comparatively The EOS 450D is more than merely an upgrade of the 400D. While it does share a number of components and features, such as the exposure meter and shutter mechanism, it has a new DIGIC III processor, a new nine-point wide area AF system with a cross-type centre sensor, and more importantly a newly-designed sensor. Repel - Anti-static technologies are applied to the low-pass filter covering the front of the sensor so as not to attract dust.Main shooting mode selection is via a large dial on the top plate, with the usual choices of program, aperture and shutter priority and manual exposure, as well as the A-Dep mode which automatically maximises depth of field, and a small selection of point-and-shoot scene modes that will be familiar to compact camera users. Shutter speed and aperture setting are adjusted via a single data entry wheel located just above the shutter button. the best RAW converter on the market, and Adobe Lightroom, for example (which already supports the 450D) does a This is a full-res crop from the top right corner of the previous image. Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds. As usual with Canon’s CMOS-sensored DSLRs noise control is exemplary. There is almost no noise up to 400 ISO, and shots at 800 ISO – the maximum setting in auto mode – are also perfectly usable. Pushing it up to 1600 ISO produces some noise, particularly in darker areas, but thanks to the way Canon applies noise reduction it looks very much like film grain, not an unattractive effect. Unfortunately due to a malfunctioning memory card I don’t have my usual selection of ISO test shots today, but I do have this shot taken at 800 ISO, hand-held at 1/5th of a second. See below for a 100-percent magnification crop. All the other test shots are at 100 ISO unless otherwise noted. and color reproduction from a much wider viewing angle. It still only has 230,000 pixels, but the larger screen is a great way to show off your images to friends and family, and will therefore definitely appeal to its target audience. By default, the current camera settings are displayed on the LCD screen. This can be turned off by pressing the Display button, and there's also a new handy sensor underneath the viewfinder, which detects that you're looking through it and turns off the LCD display to both save power and stop it from distracting you (this can be enabled or disabled in the main menu). In summary the Canon EOS 450D is very similar to the previous 400D model - an all-plastic but well-built, intuitive and very responsive DSLR -The Canon EOS 450D (also known as the Digital Rebel XSi) is the successor to the popular EOS 400D DSLR camera, and it offers a number of significant improvements that Canon hope will fight off the ever-increasing competition. The inevitable resolution increase, from 10 to 12 megapixels, is present and correct, but perhaps more exciting is the addition of Live View, with not one but two different modes including contrast detection AF, similar to that used by the Panasonic DMC-L10. The EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi also features a larger 3 inch LCD screen, new 9-point AF system, 14-bit processing, spot metering, SD cards instead of CompactFlash, and a 3.5fps continuous mode. There's even a new kit lens, the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS, which should help dispel some of the criticism aimed at Canon for not offering an affordable image stabilisation solution. The 450D is more expensive than its predecessor, which is now being offered as a budget option. Mark Goldstein found out if the Canon EOS 450D can beat both the 400D and its main rivals... Compare Prices Since the EOS 450D is significantly more expensive than its main market rivals, as one might expect it offers a significant advantage in picture quality, although this is not achieved without some effort. In default JPEG mode I found that the camera under-exposes by about a stop, especially in bright sunshine, which while preserving highlights tends to make shadows very murky. However thanks to 14-bit image processing shooting in Raw mode allows a wide range of exposure correction during post-processing, so colour and detail can emerge from shots that look hopeless as JPEGs.
