Clynelish 1972 (57.6%, Cadenhead 'White label', cask #5645, sherry, early 1990s) - by Angus - 130321 In most distilleries there is one combined vessel for low wines and feints and foreshots, but Clynelish has a seperate low wines receiver and a forehots and feints tank. The low wines from the was still are pumped into the low wines receiver, and from there into the spirits still via the spirit still charger. Clynelish 7 yo 2010/2018 (59.3%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #26.112 ‘Waxy for shore’, 1st fill barrel, 235 bottles) - by Angus - 201018 Taste: Soft, warm and caressing. There is a waft of orange incense smoke that fills the palate, turning it into a decadent boudoir of salty luxury, adorned with sprinkled orange peel, mint and spicy cinnamon. 2.0 The palate is medium-bodied and creamy. Honey and vanilla again make an appearance though rather subdued. In addition there now are oranges and a gentle touch of smoke, reminiscent of bonfire smoke. This is a great mouthfeel, almost perfectly rounded.

Clynelish 21 yo 1997/2018 (54.7%, Douglas Laing, Xtra Old Particular, hogshead, cask #12781, 309 bottles) - 241219 The nose is complex, lightly salted with dry pineapple, a smoky touch and rather flowery. The light peat is upholstered with vanilla and toffee. Lightly peppered and dry. Clynelish 16 yo 1996/2012 (57.2%, Svenska Eldvatten, first fill sherry butt, cask #8780, 240 bottles) - 110113 Palate: Tangerine astringency. Some oak with vanilla. The flavor is certainly better than the mouth feel, which is a bit on the acidic side.Oh, there is a wee bit of a burn - BUT so much taste - sweet - dark - full - that some icing down does it NO harm!! What kind of taste you ask?? Does it matter? Metaphysics aside - it is either worthwhile or not from the existential experience (redundant but meaningful). If you like Mac 15, you will like this though it is different - definitely more aggressive, not quite as smooth and refined. It’s good to see an official distillery bottling of Clynelish in the U.S. This one is very true to the Clynelish style: fresh, appetizing, and very drinkable. Notes of brine, fruit (lemon-lime), and vanilla-accented malt, are the foundation of this whisky. Delicate seaweed, peat, exotic pepper and a hint of citrus rind bitterness entertain the palate throughout, all the way to its appetizingly briny, seaweed-tinged finish. A nice waxy / creamy texture, mixed with nutty notes, briney touches and a sweet toffee edge. Orchard fruits and lemons. Orange peel. Light herbal honey, oak spice and leather. A hint of buttery cocoa as well. Nose: Sweet aromas of honey, vanilla, and baked pastry immediately hit the nose. There comes citrus, reminiscent of a freshly set key lime pie. Sugared grapefruit, lemon bars, and a touch of herbal, vegetal peat comes to life. The peat is very faint, almost undetectable, unless you begin to look for it. The nose is soft and sweet; a slightly unexpected nose from what is considered a peated expression.

Distilled in Sutherland 20 yo 2000/2020 (53.2%, Thompson Bros for MPC Lab Taiwan, 309 bottles) - 011220 Seven years…that is how long it has been since I last tried the standard bottling of Clynelish. And since I have three sparring partners – all of them from Signatory by the way – I felt it was a good preparation to try the classic Clynelish 14 Year Old one more time. Funny detail: this bottling dates from 7th January 2016, my 46th birthday. Clynelish 11 yo 2008/2019 (53%, Signatory Vintage for The Whisky Sponge, 1st fill bourbon barrel, 250 bottles) - 210220 Clynelish is known for its waxy nose. We have that here for sure. A nice complexity of salt, sweet and mild smoke. Think pipe tobacco, liquorice, banana, Earl Grey tea that was left too long in the teapot, loads of mint and a surprising hint of mustard seeds. On top of that some fruit appears in the guise of oranges, apples and raisins. Maybe even a blueberry that made a wrong turn. It ends in a bitter death.
