About this deal

Loosely a Historical Fiction (Stuart mentions at the end of the book that this is not a true historical fiction due to the more advanced technology and speech.) I found their relationship, and Hiram’s dissection of it, truly gripping. Almost romantic, in a dark way. And upon finishing the book, these two men remain in my mind. As if they’re still sitting on a boat, with a fishing net between them. A lasting impression, indeed – and further proof of this book’s well-sculpted characters. Dark Water is available on DVD, in two releases. One release is in pan and scan full screen and includes the theatrical cut, which is PG-13 and runs 105 minutes. The other is in widescreen ( aspect ratio 2.35:1) and includes an unrated cut, which is actually shorter than the theatrical cut and runs at 103minutes. Note that exact specifications vary by DVD region. There is also a PlayStation Portable UMD video version of the film. A Blu-ray Disc was released on October 17, 2006, but it only contains the widescreen PG-13 theatrical version and fewer extras than the DVD releases.

With such an opening, you know you're in for a wild ride on the high seas and Turton doesn't let us down. From that moment on the voyage is beset by one weird event after another. There is an eclectic cast of characters amongst the crew and passengers, including a captain with an expensive taste in clothes, a dwarf who is the first mate, a boatswain who rules his crew with a iron fist, the Chief Merchant in charge of the cargo, the Captain of the Guard, a minister of religion and a young woman who is his ward, as well as a shadowy noblewoman who never leaves her cabin. Sammy Pipps is accompanied by his loyal bodyguard and fellow investigative, Arent Hayes, who is determined that Sammy will survive the trip so that he can find out what he is charged with and clear his name in Amsterdam.Carver devotes himself to Borden's cure, sure it depends on drawing out the truth about that terrible voyage. But though he raises up monsters, they will not rest. So Carver must return once more to the edge of the sea and confront the man - and the myth - that lie in dark water. Cecilia's teacher is troubled by Cecilia's "imaginary friend" Natasha and Dahlia catches Cecilia talking to Natasha as well. In the bathroom, Cecilia passes out as dark water gushes from the toilets and sinks. As Dahlia is busy meeting her lawyer, Jeff Platzer, Kyle takes their daughter to his home. Samuel is the prisoner of General Jan Haan, an extremely powerful and influential figure, and is being transported to Amsterdam at the request of the Gentleman 17 who wish to see him executed. Us readers and the majority of the boat's travellers (nobles, musketeers, sailors and more) have no idea what Pipps is accused of and whether or not he's guilty. He is a celebrity, though, known by all for his crime-solving prowess and deduction skills.

There were quite a few moments that were meant to 'unnerve' the reader but I personally found them comical. In 1634, passengers and crew begin boarding the merchant ship, Saardam, for a voyage from Batavia to Amsterdam. Although I wanted nothing more than to be free of this world of ours and to flee its many forms of incarceration, here I am: not simply trapped, but inescapably installed as one of its keepers. I am powerful. I am enlightened. I am sane. But I know that my power is an illusion; my knowledge, my very sanity - illusions, too.Mad? I wanted to shout. Aren’t you mad? And you? Aren’t I? We’re all mad. Here we are, piloting a wood-shaving over an abyss. Is there a better definition of madness?” Chatsko, Maxx (January 9, 2020). "Here's Why DuPont Fell 40.5% in 2019". Fool. But above Truth and Madness, the thing that sits in the centre of this story, and indeed embodies all its themes, is Hiram Carver’s private obsession … William Borden. A five star read (which I would award more to if I could) that kept me enraptured and entertained from start to finish! Would I recommend? Aye,aye captain I would! Not only mine. There are times, as I dine in the great houses of Boston, or get ready to commit another lost soul to the asylum, when I almost sink before the fact - so plain I'm amazed at our conspiracy of silence about it - that we are all hungry, naked, heading towards a death we can't avoid. We are all at sea, sailing over dark water. Truth, I feel, is one of the core themes of this book. But the madness of the mind is, too. When protagonist Hiram is taken on as assistant physician at Charlestown’s mental asylum, the story begins to open its doors and show its true colours. I will admit I was briefly disheartened the moment Hiram returned to Boston after sailing on the Orbis. I had, in my mind, prepared myself for a book set entirely onboard, and was quite happy with that self-made premonition … but alas, the heart of the story wasn’t to be found on that boat – and I soon came to love the land-dwellers world, too. My favourite aspect of the book was the way it feels around the boundaries of what is ‘proper’ in the period. For example, the protagonist, a doctor, cannot understand why his mother and sister might find their lives unbearable when, in his view, they are required to do nothing but be looked after by men. Alongside that, there is a thread that explores his sexuality, hinting at lusts unexplored and forbidden. In fact, the whole narrative is concerned with finding the line between the personally acceptable, the morally acceptable and the socially acceptable, and examining the difference between them. It’s about the parts of ourselves that we hide, to make us palatable to others.

Dark Water feels like a classic novel – despite being a (historic) contemporary debut. Like it could have been released many, many years ago. Not because it is literally set over a century ago, but because of its strength. Its lasting impact. And I think the story itself can stand alone as its own classic, regardless of its imminent debut. In 1634, world renowned detective Sammy Pipps is set to board the Sardaam, a ship transporting nobles to Amsterdam--and him to his to execution. Sammy’s best friend and bodyguard Arent Hayes is determined to prove him innocent, but that becomes difficult considering neither man knows what Sammy is being accused of.

Exposure: Poisoned Water, Corporate Greed, and One Lawyer's Twenty-Year Battle against DuPont (2019 book) The start of Dark Water is also difficult. I nearly gave up. I like to give at least three stars and this was not rising up to that. I persisted, and was then rewarded. Indeed I enjoyed the middle of the book and towards the end of it I even considered staying up to finish it. Rich, Nathaniel (January 6, 2016). "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare". The Governor, who is compared to a hawk and happens to have very sharp nails, acts like a Bad Guy, which is not a spoiler since within a few lines of being introduced to him we know that he beats his wife.
