In terms of build quality, the Dell G3 15 3579 is entirely built with plastic. However, despite its plastic build, the Dell G3 15 3579 feels slightly heavy. Whether it was Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Civilization VI, I was able to get the games running after a bit of tweaking in the video settings. Bear in mind though, even after dropping the graphics settings to medium or low for these two titles, I couldn’t better 30fps. On the other hand, the GTX 1050, Max-Q GPU has a base frequency of 1190 MHz and a boost frequency of 1328 MHz. Since these laptops are equipped for playing straining video games, even though they’re budget systems, they all meet an acceptable baseline of performance for everyday tasks. The G3 15 isn’t the snappiest machine I’ve ever used, with a couple seconds of hang time here and there when launching a program or multitasking, but the overall speed is good enough for general use.

Operating System

If you’re an enthusiast, missing out on 60fps on maximum settings may be disappointing, but you can’t necessarily expect that in this price range. The medium-quality settings show that you can dial down some bells and whistles to achieve better than 60fps, though, which is an acceptable solution for a budget machine. As much as I would love to attribute the word ‘attractive’ to the Dell G3 15 3579, unfortunately, I can’t. It is fair to say that Dell G3 15 3579 is the most unattractive gaming laptop I have seen. You can buy the laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU, or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, Max-Q GPU. Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. The 1080p screen is bright enough, maxing out at 251 nits, and contrast is better than some expensive gaming laptops like the Alienware 17 or Digital Storm Equinox. The screen also boasts good viewing angles. We can charitably describe it as functional. Riley Young/Digital Trends On a CrystalDiskMark test, the Dell G3 15 3579 offered a sequential read speed of 107.2 MBps and a sequential write speed of 53.5 MBps. Furthermore, the Dell G3 15 3579 copied a 4.97 GB multimedia file in 42 seconds at a very slow rate of 121 MBps.

Dell offers two configurations for the Dell G3 15 3579’s processor. You can either buy this laptop with a 4-core Intel Core i5-8300HQ processor or a 6-core Intel Core i7-8750HQ processor. The G3 15 comes with a mix of Dell’s own software as well as that of its gaming division, Alienware. The standout piece of software is Alienware Command Center, which serves as a game library and shows system performance numbers. All three configurations come with a dedicated VRAM to boost the GPU performance. GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti GPU come with a 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM while the Max-Q GPU comes with a 6 GB GDRR5 VRAM. Next is Maxon's CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads. Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. The result is a proprietary score indicating a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. The Dell G3 has a 720p webcam, which is serviceable enough for simple video chatting. My beard looked like one big brown and red fuzzball, but my blue eyes and the blue stripes on my shirt were color accurate. Software and Warranty Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing trial, another tough, threaded workout that's highly CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. In it, we put a stopwatch on test systems as they transcode a standard 12-minute clip of 4K video (the open-source Blender demo movie Tears of Steel) to a 1080p MP4 file. It's a timed test, and lower results are better. The Dell G3 15 3579 scored 13,230 in a Geekbench 4 test, surpassing the entry-level gaming laptop average of 11,610. Surprisingly, the Dell G3 15 3579 beat the ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop FX504 and the Lenovo Legion Y520 scores – they scored 12,040 and 13,040 respectively. There’s a lot to talk about with the Dell G3 15 (2019). It has received a significant overhaul, both on the inside and out, and makes its predecessor look horribly outdated by comparison.

In conclusion, this laptop’s design is too modest in comparison with other gaming laptops. Its overall design doesn’t leave much to be desired aside from its rigidity. The Dell G3 Gaming Laptop isn’t perfect, but it’s among the best of its breed. The compromises Dell makes to keep performance high and price low don’t sacrifice the usability of the laptop in the ways that matter. If there is one area where the compromise feels overreaching, it’s the display. We’d like to see another budget gaming laptop come along and up the standard, but so far, the G3 is your best option at this price point. Any alternatives? The G3 15’s decent (but not great) overall speed is demonstrated again on these tests. It’s slower than the competition on two of these tests, though none is exactly ready to churn through media editing or creation. The budget tier isn’t where you look for excellence with these workloads, but they can make it through if you’re willing to wait. Graphics Tests

The affordable Dell G3 15 has been given a much-needed overhaul for 2019 and now packs latest Intel and Nvidia chips

There are four configurations to choose from, with each one boasting an 8th Gen processor, ranging from i5 to i7. In terms of GPU, you’ll find a Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card in the base model and a meatier GTX 1060 in the most expensive. You can see the UK range in the table below: Spec We see a respectable, if unremarkable, battery-life result here. The Nitro 5 is a big outlier, while the rest are clustered in the six-to-seven-hour range. Six hours of battery life in the described scenario is good for a gaming laptop, though in case you’re unaware, you won’t be able to play games for that long off the charger. Gaming drains battery much faster than general use (word processing, web browsing, and even watching videos like our test), so you’d only be able to play for a couple hours off the charger (and with diminished performance).

measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to midrange PCs with integrated graphics, while Fire Strike is more demanding and lets high-end and gaming PCs strut their stuff. The results are proprietary scores. For context, this weight is lighter than that of some cheap gaming laptops, such as the Acer Nitro 5 (5.51 pounds), but heavier than others, such as the MSI Bravo 15 (4.1 pounds). You generally have to pay more for super-slim and light systems (especially gaming laptops) like the Razer Blade 15 or MSI Stealth 15M, so this is reasonable for a budget machine. If you’re really concerned with portability, there is a new wave of 14-inch laptops, as well, but they’re a bit beyond budget-tier pricing. Like its processor and storage, Dell offers a range of configurations for this laptop’s graphics card. Furthermore, the GTX 1050 GPU has a base frequency of 1354 MHz and a boost frequency of 1493 MHz. However, GTX 1050 Ti GPU has a base frequency of 1392 MHz and a boost frequency of 1518 MHz.

IDC Whitepaper: “Optimizing Performance with Frequent Server Replacements for Enterprises” commissioned by Dell Technologies and Intel, March 2021. Results are based on interviews with 18 IT practitioners and decision makers at midsize and large enterprises and a web survey of 707 IT practitioners and decision makers at midsize and larger enterprises using Dell Technologies server solutions across 7 industries. See full whitepaper: https://www.delltechnologies.com/resources/en-us/asset/white-papers/products/servers/server-infrastructure-resiliency-enterprise-whitepaper.pdf While that’ll dip significantly while playing games, it’s nice to know you can take it away from the wall for more than few hours at a time. You’ll have to spring for something like a Razer Blade if you need a gaming laptop with close to all-day battery life. Our Take The G3 15 averaged 152fps on the lowest preset, and 114fps on the maximum preset (both manually tuned to 100 percent render resolution), making a clear case for the 120Hz screen. Games in that genre will look smoother, and give you a competitive advantage as your screen updates more frequently. Battery Rundown Test I was able to hit the 60fps mark for slightly older games such as Shadow of Mordor and Dirt Rally though. Again, I had to tone down the graphics settings to ‘medium’ but this is still a feat worth applauding considering the price of the Dell G3. This fantastic value is only emphasised by the fact it spat out a 3DMark Fire Strike result of 5502, which trumps the scores of rival gaming laptops that cost significantly more. Device On Geekbench 4.3, the Dell G3 earned a score of 16,650, surpassing the entry-level gaming average (13,285) and the Acer Nitro 5 with the same CPU (14,432). Only the Lenovo Legion Y545 with an Intel Core i7-9750H and 16GB of RAM did better, which is expected given the specs.
