Pioneer DJ have always equipped the booth ready DJM mixers with features to assist sound engineers who are responsible for the front of house system. The DJM-A9 takes this to the next level with the Stagehand* application integration. Independent Send/Return: connect external hardware and software to use alongside the internal FX. InterApp support means you can use FX/Instrument apps on your iPad - for example the virtual RMX-1000 app. Find out about some of the mixer’s features, including its high-quality sound, built-in FX, MAGVEL FADER, PRO DJ LINK and KUVO compatibility, and more. The “Parameter” knob controls something else about the effect in addition to the wet/dry (well, technically wet-dry-wet) combo knob for each channel. It is most obviously useful in taming the previously way-too-loud Noise effect, but having an extra parameter for all the effects here too is a welcome addition. There are new indicators that light up when you’ve got Beat FX active in each of the four channels as well as the master output. Great for minimising effect confusion when doing B2Bsets, or if you just love twiddling FX knobs while you DJ.Independent Send/Return: connect external hardware and software to use alongside the internal FX. InterApp support means you can use FX/Instrument apps on your iPad – for example the virtual RMX-1000 app. There are multiple improvements to the Beat FX too. Vinyl brake does what it says, with adjustable timings for slow or fast vinyl stop, and ping pong echo adds a frankly not very useful addition to the arsenal (why have a stereo echo when most club sound systems are mono anyway?). The FX Frequency selector lets you choose which frequencies to apply Beat FX to, such as isolating a delay effect only to the high-frequencies, for instance.

More accurate clip indicator: a redesigned gain structure ensures meters don’t go into the red too early. The DJM-900NXS2 has a multitude of inputs to give you total freedom to mix with the source of your choice: The Pioneer DJ DJM-A9 is the next generation of professional DJ mixer, designed to replace the DJM-900NXS2 as the industry standard mixer for clubs, festivals, radio stations and serious live streamers. With significant enhancements to sound quality, playability, connectivity, and the creative Beat FX capabilities of the mixer – the A9 has been built to elevate your performances. Sound Enhancements

Utilising a high-quality 32-bit A/D converter as part of the channel input signal path, and D/A converters of the same type for both the master and booth outputs, the DJM-A9 has been optimised to produce natural-sounding, crystal-clear audio, both on the dancefloor and in the DJ booth. It goes without saying that if you’re broadcasting or livestreaming, these characteristics will translate to improved listening for your audience. This tech minimises the need for sound-engineers to enter the booth and disturb the DJ. Furthermore, for live streams, the DJ can remain the focus without the engineer getting into shot while tweaking the mixer to ensure that the sound quality for the audience is pristine. Enhanced FX Moving across to the Beat FX section, the colour display perfectly highlights the status of the Beat FX in a clear and concise manner that’s easy to interpret. The Xpad is now in a longer straight line – this change allows expressive changes with a simple slide of your finger, adjusting parameters for a variety of effects – for example Echo/Ping Pong replicates a tape effect when the parameters are slid. The display features lighting that corresponds to the X-Pad configuration – adding to the ease of use. Improved analogue input: a new phono amp circuit, plus a new signal GND terminal to easily attach ground wires from analogue turntables. With every DJM release, there is always the addition of a new effect or two. However, it’s not often that we witness a complete overhaul of the FX section of the DJM range. The A9 boasts a number of changes, with improvements across the entire FX section from the Sound Color FX, to the External FX routing and the Beat FX section itself.

First Impressions / Setting up In this review we take a look at the DJM-900NXS2, which is an update to the old DJM-900NXS and the companion mixer to the CDJ-2000NXS2 multi player. The X-pad is now also improved, because you get eight virtual buttons on it, that are lit from behind and change depending on the effect. The only way of changing beat values was with hardware buttons before, but now, you can do so by pressing the corresponding part of the X-pad when using compatible FX. In other modes, it works much as the old pad used to. The screen is much-improved too, and Pioneer DJ is catching up a bit with the amazing effects areas on the Allen & Heath Xone:DB mixers, for instance, here. The Pioneer DJM-900NXS2 is the next generation in nexus mixers, with a 64-bit mixing processor for a more natural, warm and detailed sound. The controls are even more responsive, with a new gain structure, improved EQ and fader curves. The Sound Colour FX section now has a parameter knob for even more nuanced manipulation. Plus an independent Send/Return means you no longer have to choose between Beat FX and external FX: youcan connect your choice of external FX controllers, including apps on your iPad, and layer it on top of the on-board FX. Add to that four phono inputs, DVS support and two USB ports for easy connection to PC/Mac – and the DJM-900NXS2 is a crucial tool versatile enough for any professional booth. For booth monitoring customisation, the A9 has two band EQ control for low and high frequencies. This allows the DJ to set the tone in the booth to suit. Connectivity Explore the control panel and discover the functions of each button, knob and slider, as well as the X-Pad. On the rear panel, find out what can be connected to all the different terminals. Connecting the DJM-900NXS2 to your other equipment Improved channel fader curves: the three curves have been fine-tuned for more precision and control. The DJM-900NXS2 has undergone a complete overhaul under the bonnet to deliver clear sound with more depth and colour: This is actually pretty awesome. You can now patch in an iPad for effects, for instance by routing in a Pioneer RMX-1000 via the iPad app that emulates every function of that unit, although any compatible app can work.

Find out how to use advanced features including Quantize and Link Monitor. Get creative with Sound Color FX and Beat FX and use external equipment to effect the audio via send/return. Changing settings on the DJM-900NXS2 The FX section has had an upgrade on the DJM-900 NXS2 with the addition of a parameter knob for more manipulation of the colour effects. Talking of sharing the mixer with other DJs, the DJM-900NXS2 has twin USBs meaning twin sound cards, so two DVS DJs can share the mixer by plugging their laptops in simultaneously, making DJ switchovers a smooth and wonderful thing (Pioneer has of course taken a leaf straight out of Rane’s book with this feature). Finally, the new External FX routing allows you to send and return your selected channel independently. On the DJM-A9’s predecessor, send and return disabled the Beat FX section. This simple but effective update provides greater creative freedom when using external effect pedals etc. In addition, this new routing capability will enable connection of external equipment, such as a sampler, with routing through to any channel. Boost Your Performance The DJM-900NXS2’s FX and their controls have been completely redesigned to deliver detailed levels of manipulation: With the Pioneer DJM-900 NXS2 you get independent Send / Return allowing use of beat FX and External FX. With the DJM900 Nexus 2 you can connect external effects including iPad apps and layer on top of the on-baord FX on the Pioneer DJM-900 NXS2. The Pioneer DJM-900 NXS2 is the perfect partner to the new Pioneer CDJ-2000 NXS2 Rekordbox Multiplayer. First, the Color FX. What started out as simply a filter knob under each channel’s EQs once upon a time has now become a whole ecosystem itself, with six FX available to you here (Space, Echo Dub, Sweep, Noise, Crush, Filter), and crucially, a new knob:
