This digital piano has a fully weighted keyboard with touch sensitivity. I like the quality of the mechanism and the that of the built. The keys are heavy enough to create that acoustic piano feeling. The material of the keys is of nice quality as well, you really don’t have that sensation of cheap keys. They went so far as to fit the keyboard with red felt, just like you can notice on acoustic pianos, a detail you can’t find that often in this price range. Functions & Features This is truly a beginner’s digital piano with very high music quality and longevity guaranteed. The piano runs on a 12 V/DC current and is provided by a 3A-type power supply adapter. The weight of this piano is just 33.6 pounds and it is portable. It delivers exceptional sound protection in the studio and is known for its exceptional aesthetic value. Its impressive dimensions make it extremely preferable for easy transportation and storage. Sounds and Polyphony The main reason the Donner DEP-20 beat out the DEP-10 in terms of tone is the sound library. The Donner DEP-10 only comes with 10 built-in voices. Now, this is still a fair amount for a beginner’s piano, and it covers just about all your tone needs when starting out with lessons. However, it doesn’t give you that much versatility, which means you might need to end up upgrading as you get better at the instrument. Both of these pianos use the Yamaha AWM sampling method. This is one of the best ways to produce top quality voices through the standard sampling method. Instead of using low-quality samples with artificial and digital decay, both of the pianos use the best samples out there with completely natural decay. While this takes up more memory, both brands chose to give their pianos more storage capabilities so that they can play higher quality samples. There was almost no competition when it came to comparing the sound library of these two models. The Alesis Recital Pro comes with 12 different voices. This is about standard for a digital piano, and since the voices are good quality, beginners have just about all the sounds they need to start learning the instrument.

The Donner DEP-20 has adjustable touch response. So, when using this piano, you can tweak the sensitivity to your liking. If you have a lighter touch, you can set it to “light”, and if you have heavier hands, you can set the sensitivity to “hard” and the piano will adjust accordingly. The entire body is hard plastic and shouldn’t cause any concerns unless it’s mistreated (and we know kids can be heavy-handed). But, even with the most excitable kids, it should be absolutely fine. I’ve tried to focus on the positives here, and for the right player, there are many. It’s easy to use because the important features have dedicated buttons, and the panel is nice and clear. The abundance of sounds will keep even the most demanding youngsters entertained for a long time. I am usually not the biggest fan of seemingly inexpensive alternatives that look like more expensive ones. But in the case of the DEP-20, all my assumptions were wrong. I started my research for my Donner DEP-20 review not expecting too much from this piano. Because over the last few years, I had the occasion to test out various digital pianos, some of which are really high end and expensive, I expected to be disappointed by this one. But to my surprise it went way beyond my expectations. You often have this feeling when you decide to leave your expectations at the door. But was it good in reality or did it only surprise me because I decided to not have any expectations? Well, I think there’s some substance to this digital piano.

Some students are easily distracted by a large sound bank. Others are easily bored when there’s not enough. I can say for sure that the DEP-20 will provide lots of fun for youngsters who like to explore new sounds.

You actually have 238 different tones to choose from like ukulele, drum, bass, and many others. All these tones are a nice addition to the feature offer of the DEP-20. You can imagine that only your skill level and creativity are the limit to what music you can play. Don’t get me wrong, there are digital pianos out there with considerably better characteristics than this one, but I must say that the advantageous value for money ratio is kind of turning into a theme with Donner digital pianos. I’m saying this because it’s the same situation I talked about in my Donner DEP-10 review, you get a lot of quality for a fair price. Maybe it’s because you don’t pay extra for the brand name. Although you might think the DEP-20 is the perfect first keyboard for you, it’s important to remember that even with a limited budget, there are still plenty of options. Here are a few that I like. The Donner DEP-20 is equipped with graded hammer action. This means that the action on the left side is heavier than the action on the right side. This is how an acoustic piano is set up and the Donner model is designed to replicate just that. Both of these pianos have a couple of different playing modes that have different benefits. The most notable of these modes is lesson mode. With this mode, you can divide the piano into two different zones with the same voice and tuning. This is a great feature for piano lessons, as the teacher can demonstrate a bunch of different music techniques the exact same way you should play it without having to use the student’s side of the piano. This feature also comes in handy if you’re playing piano duets, as you won’t need two separate pianos if you activate this mode. It’s not too heavy to move around the house when needed, but it’s rather big and clumsy. It comes with five feet on the bottom, one of which is oddly positioned in the middle of the underside. The Donner DEP-20 probably has the most powerful built-in speaker system in its class and possibly even up a price range or two. That’s not something that I was expecting to find, but it’s true, thanks to dual 25-watt amplifiers.
