The Marpac Dohm White Noise Machine doesn’t use recordings, played in a loop, like other white noise machines. Instead, the noise is created by a small fan inside the body of the machine.
The D11 has 11 sounds including a fan, lullaby music, and even a busy restaurant-like sound with muffled chatter. It's small but can get quite loud, and the swirl design works as a night light. There are 30-, 60-, and 90-minute timers, or you can leave it running continuously. It charges via USB-C, and if you use a timer, the battery should last you for a few nights. I left it on for nearly 12 hours in my office and it was still going the next day. In the photo above, you can see 12 white noise machines I tested before writing this review. The photo is darker than usual so you can compare the nightlight feature that five of them have.Our favourite features? Combined with the soft lights that cause the entire cloud to gently glow in various colours, the gentle sound routine will keep your baby happy and relaxed until they doze off. Despite these shortcomings, the Homedics Sound Spa Rejuvenate might appeal to those needing a device with battery power autonomy or those with budget constraints. How you plan to use your sound machine will determine how small you’ll need it to be. Every sound machine we tested and researched is designed to sit on a nightstand. Some are even compact and lightweight enough to toss in a travel bag and take on the road, too. If you do plan to take yours on the go, you may want to consider a battery-powered option, which might allow you to leave the power cord at home or use your phone’s standard USB cord for charging along the way.
In summary, the Dreamegg D11, with its child-centric sounds, pretty nightlight, rechargeable battery, and reasonable price is a great choice for parents who want a portable white noise machine when staying away from home. Personalising your routine is straightforward. I love snuggling down to blue-hued rainfall, it takes my mind off the tinnitus ringing in my ears. There are three fan noises: floor, wall and regular. They’re not notably different from each other, but I appreciate the versatility. The Homedics Sound Spa Rejuvenate has one unique feature warranting its inclusion in this review – the capacity to run on batteries. I DO NOT RECOMMEND anyone buy this product as it is not fit for purpose and displays multiple issues that affect its performance. The cost charged by Dreamegg for its products is not reflected in the quality of its products. Dreamegg are charging for premium product – whilst supplying cheap generic product.
How does white noise work?
I’ve kept a close eye on the prices of white noise machines for many years, so I wanted to share a couple of observations I thought would be helpful. Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation from real parents, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which white noise machines discerning Mumsnet users had bought for their children. We compiled a list of the machines they recommended for being the most effective at helping their babies sleep. Noise machines vary from little portable powerhouses that throw out a handful of fan sounds to complex and expensive wired ‘companions’ that connect to your phone and train you in sleep-related habits, like meditation and mindfulness. As a result, they range greatly in price too. Some are aimed specifically at calming children, with long battery life and baby-proof clips for cots. Others are good for adults, thanks to more sophisticated designs and diverse audio options. Our favourite features? One of the best selling points of the Dreamegg white noise machine is the level of control you have over its features. There are 11 different sound options to choose from (including white noise, nature sounds, and lullabies), 32 different volume levels, and an adjustable night light.
A good sound library is arguably the most important feature of any sound machine. It’s what you’re buying the device for, after all. The “right” sound library is the one that helps fall asleep and stay asleep, so it’s a matter of personal preference. Consider the type of sound that you prefer—nature sounds, white noise, ambient fan sounds, guided meditation, sleep stories, and more are all options with many of today’s best sound machines. For the loops, I spent many hours trying to time them as it’s often difficult to spot the loop. The higher score means the loop is longer and/or undetectable with sounds like rain. The Morphée has three keys. The first one controls the theme of your session. You can choose from eight themes including breathing, nature sounds, visualisations and body scan. We tried all of them at different times, and as soon as the sessions started we could feel our troubles melt away – it’s absolutely magic.The portability is based mainly on the size and weight, but I also considered whether it can be played without plugging it in. The user-friendly interface consists of seven simple buttons for easy volume and sound control, reducing the hassle of combined controls. The choice to play continuously or set a timer for up to four hours adds some more flexibility. In table 3 below, you can see which ones have some of the main features I look out for when reviewing white noise machines. These aren’t the only features that exist in the sound machine world, but I think they are important ones to consider. Machine We have the Marpac hush which we love. its transportable and it goes really quite loud. There's no noticeable loop on it either. The Tommee Tippee Ollie the Owl has a dual function. Not only does it serve as a white noise machine, but also as a soft toy for your child to cuddle with. It also has a mode called ‘breathing’ which basically cycles from dim to bright repeatedly. It’s a great idea, but I didn’t find it was as good as a constant brightness. It does a little jump when it reaches the lowest brightness, which makes it less subtle than I would have liked.Another very versatile bit of kit, the Yoto player has been a huge hit with our kids. We used the sleep radio function (found via the app on your phone). You can also choose from white noise, pink noise, brown noise, vacuum cleaner, noisy fan, hairdryer, rainy car ride, train journey and washing machine. There’s also a vast array of natural sounds and some musical sounds too. This is all controlled via your app, so you can work it remotely – something we loved. The Dohm Uno is the second white noise machine on my list that contains a real fan. It’s a no-frills device, with just one button used to switch the internal fan on or off. The fan produces a reliably constant sound that’s soothing to listen to when falling asleep, relaxing, or studying. It’s not just babies that struggle to drift off at night; many toddlers need a little help from time to time too. Designed by Dr Harvey Karp, the SNOObear is a teddy and white noise machine rolled into one. It provides either 30 or 60 minutes of shushing (which you stop and start by squeezing the teddy’s tummy), three volume levels, and six soothing and shushing sounds including a rumbly train, soft shush and loud shush.
