I was unaware that the Panzers lost over 50% of their armoured vehicles in the battles for Boulogne and Calais, before encircling Dunkirk.. The incredibly strong resistance by the French and British troops in these towns was quite heroic, especially as they had very little means of escaping the ever-tightening noose of the Wehrmacht forces. This is a fascinating account of Dunkirk from the view of the Germans. Dunkirk, of course, saw the Allies staring defeat in the face, with Operation Dynamo and the evacuation of the beaches. Although, in effect almost a military disaster, it was an escape which meant that the British could retrench and continue the fight. Agreeing to surrender, the trapped regiment started to file out of the farmhouse, waving a white flag tied to a bayonet. They were met by German machine-gun fire. Some were requisitioned by the Navy and crewed by naval personnel, while others were manned by their civilian owners and crew. The first members of this small armada—which would become known as the “Little Ships”—began arriving on the beaches of Dunkirk on the morning of May 28, helping to speed up the evacuation.

When told there were no reserves and England would be left wide open, he decided to get who he could out. This put huge stain on the relationship with the French. As the boats came, British soldiers simply pushed the French troops aside in the desperate scramble. Luftwaffe continually strafed the beaches, the men below could only wait and curse the absence of the RAF. Of course, the British did not have enough equipment, planes, at times fuel in these flying machines to cope with the incredible challenges faced early on – and later- in this awful world war.
