About this deal

Additionally, if possible, try to do your Eustachian tube exercises at the same time each day so that they become part of your daily routine. Following evaluation and diagnosis, your doctor will determine the best course of treatment. This may include medication or surgery, and a doctor may recommend avoiding triggers. Surgical treatments include: The more prepared we are, the better our bodies will perform – this applies not only to physical activities but also mental ones too! In addition to providing physical benefits, eustachian tube exercises often bring psychological relief as well. Knowing that there is something concrete they can do to manage their condition can offer comfort and assurance to those who have been struggling with Eustachian tube dysfunction. Unlike in children, where grommet surgery to treat glue ear comes with a very low risk of complications, in adults, grommet surgery is more likely to cause problems. Sometimes, the resulting complications are worse than the symptoms of Eustachian tube dysfunction, which is why grommet surgery is usually only recommended when all other treatments have failed.

ETD affects about 2% of adults but it is much more common in children due to the proximity of the Eustachian tube to the tonsils and adenoids (which tend to be larger in children whilst they are developing their immune system). The Eustachian tube is also important in allowing drainage of fluid and secretions from the middle ear and thereby preventing middle ear infections (“otitis media”). You can also try over-the-counter nasal sprays that contain steroids. These can also be prescribed by your GP. Over time, negative pressure can build up in the ear, causing pain, ear fullness and muffled hearing. When this occurs, sometimes your doctor can see the ear drum (tympanic membrane) change shape due to this pressure and become concave. Negative pressure and structural changes in the ear can also be signs of obstructive Eustachian type dysfunction. The Cheyne Child Development Service - School age Autism (ASD) Assessment Pathway Parent Information

If balloon dilatation isn’t successful, your doctor may then recommend grommet surgery. This is a more invasive procedure where a thin, hollow plastic tube is inserted into your middle ear through your eardrum. This completely bypasses your Eustachian tube. Treatments for Eustachian tube dysfunction

The most common surgical treatment for persistent/problematic Eustachian Tube Dysfunction is the insertion of a grommet. A grommet is a small hollow ventilation tube inserted across the ear drum through a small slit made in the eardrum. This procedure allows fluid to drain from the middle part of the ear, and allows air in. Valsalva and Toynbee manoeuvres can be done to push some air into middle ear, take a deep breath, pinch your nose and close your mouth, and gently pop your ears. Do not be very forceful. Some balloons and auto-inflation devices are designed to direct air to the middle ear and promote emptying of middle ear fluid and are available over the counter or online.

This is especially important if your hearing is getting worse, particularly on one side. Steam inhalation can ease symptoms by getting more warm air into your nose and subsequently your Eustachian tubes.

How To Do Eustachian Tube Exercises

These exercises almost act as a kind of yoga for your ears – just like when you stretch before doing yoga to warm up your body, by taking time to do eustachian tube exercises beforehand you’re warming up your inner ear and getting ready to take on any challenge it might face.
