Anne seems to have believed completely that her activities were no sin – and that her tastes were shared by many women in her circle – but that those of homosexual men were. Reverend Thomas Ainsworth travels to Halifax and sets his sights on Ann Walker. Hearing of Ainsworth's arrival, Miss Lister sets out to deal with him in her own way. While Anne Lister proposes marriage to Miss Walker, Mrs Priestley spreads vicious statements to Miss Parkhill about Anne Lister's character and her being a lesbian, which ultimately leads to Ann Walker's detriment. Thomas Sowden's mother comes to the realisation of Sam Sowden's mysterious disappearance. Ann Walker fights and struggles to reconcile her desire for Anne Lister with the mix of her family's expectations and her faith eventually leading to Ann vociferously shunning Anne. In an attempt to keep Lister away from Walker to stop her from taking Ann's money to sink her coal-pits, Christopher Rawson sends a thug to beat up and intimidate Anne. One American woman has launched an Anne Lister festival in Halifax. It started as a weekend and has now ballooned into a fortnight-long event. The University of York has named a college after her, while Halifax has put up a statue. She inherited Shibden Hall, Halifax from her uncle and massively improved it, managing its farms with great efficiency. It was at Shibden that she met Ann Walker whom she would ‘marry’. The book recounts the affairs that she had up to meeting heiress Ann in 1832; her most passionate affair prior to this was to Mariana Belcombe who broke Anne’s heart when she married Charles Lawton. The relationship between Anne and Ann was a strange one in some ways as for the first two years of the relationship Ann would not commit to them being together and to AL’s frustration frequently prevaricated. Their relationship became sexual and this was described in the dairies. AL felt that Ann was far more sexually aware than she ever let on and certainly wasn’t an innocent.
