About this deal

As they navigate this new landscape, Ly finds herself torn between two worlds. She knows she must honor her parents’ Buddhist faith and contribute to the family livelihood, working long hours at home and then later as a manicurist alongside her mother at a nail salon in Brownsville, Brooklyn, which her parents eventually take over. But at school, Ly feels the mounting pressure to blend in. After Ly is dismissed from the Honors College, she meets Joseph and begins a romantic relationship with him, the first we’ve seen her experience. In what ways is Joseph a grounding and supportive figure for Ly? What does their relationship add to her life that she has not previously experienced? Ask the team to brainstorm items that propel them forward and place them on the canvas above the water line. These are the “wind in their sails” or the “speedboat motor”. Although I understood something about her father, mother, siblings, I can mainly identify with the author and how as children, we'd continue to suppress our individual needs for the good of the family out of filial respect and duties as a child, even at high costs and detriments to ourselves. My heart also aches for her mother's role in the family dynamics, bridging the chasm of patriarchal structure, attempting to smooth the feuds as best she could. I deeply enjoyed following Ly’s reflections. Her nuanced and compassionate perspective rendered a multidimensional understanding of those closest to her, and she covered a wide number of complicated and immeasurably important topics, including generational trauma, feminism, and the importance of treating individual needs in education.

One of Uncle Remus' stories, "The Story of the Pigs" (alt. title: "Brer Wolf and the Pigs"), found in Nights with Uncle Remus (1883), is a re-telling of the story, with the following differences: The Disney version of the three pigs can be seen in Walt Disney Parks and Resorts as meet-and-greet characters. [19] This is an excellent memoir: if a bit of a traditional “young immigrant overcomes obstacles and makes good” story, there’s a reason we love that story, and this one is told well and with nuance. Quality of Images: If they have made quality work in the past, they will most likely deliver quality again. Notice the composition, color, framing, and imagery. Do you like what you see? If you see visuals in their work you like, you will most likely love the images the company captures for you. We are a video production company after all.The 2008 children's book The Three Horrid Pigs and the Big Friendly Wolf changes the story: the pigs and the wolf are depicted as friends. There are funny moments and harsh ones. It is a heavy duty, one’s heritage. Can she honor the past, and yet build her own future, free of the hooks of familial expectations? An emotional journey and a beautiful memoir. Add it to your summer reading list!

I'm Phu K. Tran and I am the second eldest in Ly's family. This memoir was beautifully written by my sister, whom we are all very proud of and I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in learning more about our story. Ly experiences a second traumatic event at the hands of a well-meaning authority figure when she is taken to a psychiatric hospital without notice or explanation. There, she meets several people she makes a connection with, but is rattled all the while. Discuss Ly’s experiences and if anything surprised you. How might mental health patients be better served? Working from the “what the team can’t control” list, ask the team to identify what they would prefer be done about the situation and prepare a list for the Scrum Master and Product Owner to raise as impediments to the appropriate audiences. When the time has expired, move the topic to “Done” then move the next ranked topic into “Doing”. Discuss for the allotted amount of time. Ly’s parents tend to rely on Buddhism in their struggles and instruct Ly to pray when she faces difficulty. In what ways does Buddhism influence Ly throughout her life? How does her relationship to it change? Then, ask the team to collectively sort their concerns into lists of “what the team can control” and “what the team can’t control”. Ly Tran is just a toddler in 1993 when she and her family immigrate from a small town along the Mekong river in Vietnam to a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Queens. Ly’s father, a former lieutenant in the South Vietnamese army, spent nearly a decade as a POW, and their resettlement is made possible through a humanitarian program run by the US government. Soon after they arrive, Ly joins her parents and three older brothers sewing ties and cummerbunds piece-meal on their living room floor to make ends meet.
