Irvine Welsh is a Scottish novelist, playwright, and short story writer, best known for his 1993 debut novel Trainspotting. The book became a literary and cultural phenomenon and was later adapted into a successful film directed by Danny Boyle in 1996.

Welsh and Kelman shortlisted for Saltire literary prize". BBC News. 21 October 2016. Archived from the original on 19 December 2018 . Retrieved 21 October 2016. Ecstasy is three short stories about love under the influence. Each is written in Welsh’s signature style, outrageous, imaginative, often absurdly hilarious and Scottish as hell. No, I’ve learned how to do that down the years. I didn’t know how to write a novel when I wrote Trainspotting. I had these loose stories that seemed to be heading somewhere; the start was going on too much about how they became junkies, so I cut it and went straight into their world and ended it with a heist ending I thought would be dramatic. Then I went on to The Acid House – more stories. Marabou Stork Nightmares was my first attempt at a conventional novel but it turned out quite experimental. I was just messing around in those first few books. They were probably the best ones, because then you learn how to write and you end up writing like everybody else [laughs]. Welsh's novels share characters, giving the feel of a "shared universe" within his writing. For example, characters from Trainspotting make cameo appearances in The Acid House, Marabou Stork Nightmares, Ecstasy, Filth, and slightly larger appearances in Glue, whose characters then appear in Porno.Welsh co-directed "The Right to liberty", a chapter of the documentary film The New Ten Commandments, in 2008. The story goes that Trainspotting stood to be Booker-shortlisted in 1993 until two judges threatened to quit. Do you ever think what might have been? He co-authored Babylon Heights with his screen writing partner Dean Cavanagh. The play premiered in San Francisco at the Exit Theatre and made its European première in Dublin, at The Mill Theatre Dundrum, directed by Graham Cantwell. The plot revolves around the behind-the-scenes antics of a group of Munchkins on the set of The Wizard of Oz. The production included the use of oversized sets with actors of regular stature.

I'm really glad I've finally read this book; I've been meaning to since I was about 14 years old (10/11 years ago), as it is My Chemical Romance's namesake. Haha. Like Alasdair Gray before him, Welsh also experiments with typography. In the novel Filth, the tapeworm's internal monologue is imposed over the top of the protagonist's own internal monologue (the worm's host), visibly depicting the tapeworm's voracious appetite, much like the "Climax of Voices" in Gray's novel 1982, Janine. In teoria picchio, minaccio e faccio stragi. In pratica sono portata a cercare di comprendere, anche qualche volta a comprendere che qualcuno faccia schifo - non la maggior parte di noi, per fortuna. Welsh returned to Edinburgh in the late 1980s, where he worked for the city council in the housing department. He then studied for an MBA at Heriot-Watt University. [4] Fiction [ edit ] Irvine Welsh in Warsaw, 13 March 2006Criminal and druggie Dave experiences love for the first time when he meets the armless Samantha - armless due to a pregnancy drug, Tenazadrine, given to her mother during her pregnancy and marketed to her by a few specific businessmen - men who Samantha, with Dave's help, is not ready to forgive or forget about... Terry Lawson - an arrogant lothario, his sexual exploits find him involved in the local dogging / amateur pornography scene, into which Rab introduces Nikki, becoming the star of Seven Rides. Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, Mark Renton is co-owner of a successful nightclub. One night, a DJ from his hometown (Carl Ewart from Welsh's previous novel Glue) plays at one of his clubs and recognises him.
