Ardbeg Distillery is situated on the south coast of the isle of Islay. Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy owns t he distillery and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. Ardbeg is peated to 55 ppm. The Ardbeg 10 yo whisky is aged for at least 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels. Lagavulin Scotch was one of the six whiskies marketed as part of the ‘Classic Malts of Scotland’ when it was launched in 1988, and that only increased the demand. The Lagavulin distillery’s spirit stills are actually larger than the wash stills, along with a 4.4 ton stainless steel mash tun. Lagavulin is one of a trio of distilleries sat on the south coast of Islay. Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression. Located on the shores of the Lagavulin Bay, the Lagavulin distillery is home to two pairs of stills. Lagavulin has a long distillation time, and many believe this imparts the intense richness of the famous single malt whisky. Taste: Feels a bit subdued, maybe because of the relatively low strength, but has a good body in general. A tinge of salt at first, combined with caramel—let’s call it salted caramel then. Some tar, green peat and a pinch of pepper.

A fruity lemony sourness, but not as sharp/refreshing as the Ledaig 10 which I felt was a bit frustrating as I wanted that hit, but it rounded off into the "sourness" you get from honey, of which, the sweetness transpired as it sat on my tongue a bit longer, which was soon greeted by a smokey body and savoury finish. We were looking forward to sampling this new expression of Lagavulin as the Islay distillery has long been one of our favourites. It delivers everything that we want from a smoky whisky, and Lagavulin in particular - classy and expressive smoke, vibrant green fruits and delicious sweetness.
