About this deal

Aberystwyth became popular with tourists with the arrival of two railways in 1869. Many of the fine buildings along North Parade, the Promenade, date from this Victorian heyday, when the west Wales coast became accessible to many for the first time. Aberystwyth South Beach An aerial view of South Beach and Aberystwyth town The village of Capel Celyn was one of a small number of communities where Welsh was the only language used, and its destruction gave rise to widespread discontent and stronger protests in support of the Welsh language. What is always a treat though is the world Pryce has built from a wonderful, but not exactly buzzing with activity, town. Aberystwyth was my home for four year before I finally had to say goodbye and return to London and I sometimes think I wish I’d seen it in such a unique and humour filled way. But I often return to that funny old town by the sea and every time it gets a little easier to sit on the castle, or the monument or one of the benches and watch the town turn darker and I almost expect to hear Myfanwy Montez’ voice carry on the wind. Pryce writes in the style of Raymond Chandler and has been labelled "the king of Welsh noir". [2] His Aberystwyth Noir novels are incongruously set on the rainswept streets of an alternate universe version of the Welsh seaside resort and university town of Aberystwyth. The hero of these novels is Louie Knight, the best private detective in Aberystwyth (also the only private detective in Aberystwyth), who battles crime organised by the local Druids, investigates the strange case of the town's disappearing youths, and gets involved in its burgeoning film industry, which produces What The Butler Saw movies. It is also a great base for exploring Mid Wales, with the beautiful Cambrian Mountains just a few miles away by car.

Last Tango in Aberystwyth (Louie Knight Mystery, book 2) by

It was originally intended to be a hotel, and when that fell through it was taken over by the fledgling University of Wales. It was the main building of Aberystwyth University until the 1960s, until the new campus was built on the hill in Penglais, on the outskirts of town. Louie Knight is Aberystwyth's one private detective. He is a bitter, cynical man haunted by the death of his best friend Marty at school, by his inability to stop the dam raid and various old loves who have suffered various tragedies, notably Bianca and Myfanwy. After working as a policeman in Swansea he became a PI and moved to Aberystwyth, although what made him leave regular policing is never explained. He is passionately in love with Myfanwy, only taking her case because he loved her in Mon Amour. His agency is called Knight Errant investigations (a joke he now winces at), although his card reads Louie Knight, Gumshoe. He has a long running hatred of Mrs. Llantrisant (who plays a role as infrequent Moriarty to Louie's Holmes). Working out of an office at 22/1b Stryd-Y-Popty he is unaware he is a detective living in what literally translates as 'Baker Street', and he lives in a caravan so that he can swim in the sea, where he feels most relaxed under the waves. He drinks Captain Morgan rum, preferring it to the stereotypical whisky because, despite a similar alcohol content, rum comes from sunny islands, while whisky comes from Scotland. He is a troubled character who tries to solve some murder cases in the area around Aberystwyth, and some of the cinematography is quite reminiscent of Danish noir crime series including The Killing and Borgen. The most famous graffiti in Wales can be found on the main A487 road about ten miles (16 km) south of Aberystwyth. The village is on the edge of the Hafod Estate, a famous landscaped area from the late 18 th century. The mansion around which it was laid out is long gone, but there are still plenty of wonderful walks in the woods to enjoy. Elan Valley Craig Goch in the Elan Valley South Beach is much the quieter of the two beaches in Aberystwyth. It’s on the south side of Castle Hill and is a wide, pebbly beach with great views along the coast. The row of brightly painted houses and B&Bs adds to the seaside feeling of cheer and brightness.

Pryce has also written The Case of the 'Hail Mary' Celeste and Aberystwyth Noir - It Ain't Over till the Bearded Lady Sings, a BBC Radio 4 Afternoon Drama, first broadcast on 15 May 2013, featuring Louie Knight and produced and directed by Kate McAll. It’s a large concentric castle built on a headland between the two Aberystwyth beaches, with parts razed to their foundations but one standing tower remaining, looking out over Cardigan Bay. You can walk around the ruins for free, bring a picnic, sit and watch the sunset, whatever you wish. If you only have time for a walk in one direction, I’d suggest heading up north via Constitution Hill, then embarking on a roller-coaster of a walk past two beaches, Wallog and Clarach Bay, before you reach the village of Borth. Calamity" Jane, originally from Machynlleth, is Louie's assistant, whom he met as a tout in the Bingo hall during Aberystwyth Mon Amour. Aged 18 by The Unbearable Lightness she is more optimistic than Louie, and seems to base her detective technique on films. She investigated the old fire at Nanteos for a strange client, Gabriel Bassett, to gain her detectives licence. Her relationship with Louie is purely platonic, but no other lover of hers has been mentioned so far. The drive to the Elan Valley is one of the best things to do around Aberystwyth. You could take a short cut there via the Cwmystwyth road, but to better appreciate the Elan Valley drive I’d suggest taking the A44 from Aberystwyth to where it meets the A470 at Llangurig, then head south to Rhayader and turn towards the Elan Valley from there.Aberystwyth is a university town, and during term time its population increases by about 50%. It keeps the town young, and also by far the most cosmopolitan place in rural Mid Wales.

Aberystwyth is a great place to gain an introduction to the Welsh language, which is widely spoken in the town and surrounding area. Aberystwyth has been the setting for a series of detective novels and a TV crime series, and both have added to interest in the area. urn:lcp:lasttangoinabery0000pryc_s8k7:epub:ef2606c1-76f3-4bc8-a65c-d5d05d04f0e8 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier lasttangoinabery0000pryc_s8k7 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t81k9461d Invoice 1652 Isbn 0747566577 Three series of Hinterland, a noir crime drama centred around a troubled detective, Tom Mathias, were shot between 2013 and 2016 around Aberystwyth.

It’s currently being restored, with a view to it being used as a postgraduate research centre in the future. Aberystwyth Cliff Railway The Cliff Railway from the top of Constitution Hill The book follows Aberystwyth detective Louie Knight as he attempts to find the missing Dean of the Faculty of Undertaking. We follow Knight through an Aberystwyth both starkly different and strange and yet somehow oddly familiar to people who have known the town and the dark story takes him to every corner from the sleazy hotels and toffee apple dens to the wild hinterlands and ancient university. It was one of the last additions from Aber’s Victorian era, and at the top you’re rewarded with amazing views along the Ceredigion coast and towards Snowdonia. On a clear day you can also see the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula and Bardsey Island. Hinterland was broadcast in two versions. The Welsh language version, Y Gwyll, was shown on S4C in Wales, while the English version (with some Welsh subtitled scenes) was shown on the BBC. Strata Florida Abbey The Romanesque arch at Strata Florida The Pier is also home to thousands of starlings which roost there in the autumn and winter months. The best starling murmurations, which occur around sunset, are usually in November, and again in late February and early March, as winter gradually gives way to spring.
