About this deal

The first, and easiest, is using a liming wax, which is basically just a white furniture wax. This is the liming wax brand I most use. You use it a lot like a furniture wax, where you apply a paint and then buff the furniture wax into the grain pattern. If you are looking to add an elegant finish with old-world charm, Cerusing is the perfect technique. Originally developed in the 1500s, it is currently enjoying a renaissance among furniture refinishers and DIYers.

Bob Vila Cerused Wood: All About The Furniture Finish - Bob Vila

The bottom drawer has two passes of Citristrip, the top two only had one. You can see I didn’t do a good job applying the stripper in a uniform direction on the top one and that made for more work, removing the swirls, later. If you want to learn more about how to apply liming wax, we will talk more about it in a later section. Important Properties Of Pine As you can see from the photo below, I did a sloppy job on purpose, and left a lot of places with no paint where there were crevices. I want those areas to be dark so it looks very old. It’s called Cerusing Finish (or sometimes Limed Finish), and it’s a process of rubbing a contrasting color into the pores of wood to highlight the patterns of the wood grain, similar to a whitewashing technique. You may choose to sand if you have a sander. If you don’t have one, you can skip this. All my sander did was take off some dried Citrustrip clumps. With its impressive style and antique look, the unique pattern options are endless. If you are looking for something elegant and unique, give this technique a try! Cerusing vs Liming Wax Work the liming wax into the grain of the wood with Liberon Ultra fine Steel Wool (0000) or a lint-free cotton cloth and wipe over with a clean cloth to remove excess. Allow to dry for 3 minutes.

If you have a piece of wood with a strong, visible grain to it – something like oak – you can really bring out this wood grain with liming wax. This isn’t a difficult technique to learn. You don’t need to bring out any paints – all you need is White Chalk Paint™ Wax, a Wax Brush and a lint-free cloth. Raising the grain is also a useful step when you want to stain pinewood and use liming wax with pine. This extra step will help the grains catch the liming wax better when the wax is applied, which will allow the natural grain to shine through the layer of liming wax. It may be helpful to test the liming wax on a small swatch of pinewood first. Since there are a few varieties of pinewood, the liming wax may show up differently, and you will be able to use liming wax with pinewood without the additional steps. How To Use Liming Wax On Pinewood – Step By StepThis step layers the color that contrasts with the white cerusing and what to do is up to you. You can use any color of stain, paint, or use a clear coat. This step also will help the grain expand for your cerusing layer.
