About this deal

Lesson templates, prompt cards and 'how to' videos ensure teachers all have a consistent approach and structure for each lesson. Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 receive additional Phonics ‘keep up’ sessions either on a 1:1 basis or in a small group. o Children in Year 1 review Phase 3 and 4 and are taught to read and spell words using Phase 5 GPCs with fluency and accuracy. At Princes Risborough Primary, we believe that reading and writing is an essential life skill and we are dedicated to enabling our children to become enthused, engaged and successful lifelong readers and writers. To support this, we practise the ‘Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised’ Phonics scheme and implement the following:

We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’. These include: A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently. By the time children leave Princes Risborough Primary School we want them to be competent and fluent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a passion for reading a range of genres including poetry, and participate in discussions about books. At Princes Risborough Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to all learning and so the impact of our reading curriculum goes beyond and is embedded across the entire curriculum for our children. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. The best way of learning something is to do it and then teach someone else. These letters and sounds flashcards are designed to make KS1 children speak out loud and challenge their friends to do the same.

We use the government validated systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) ‘Little Wandle: Letters & Sounds Revised’. The programme is designed to teach children to read from Reception to Year 2, using the skills of decoding and blending sounds together to form words. The Little Wandle programme provides a full progression through all commonly occurring GPCs(sounds), working from simple to more complex, and taking into account the frequency of their occurrence in the most commonly encountered words.

Curriculum

A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together. The Reading Leader and SLT use the audit and prompt cards to regularly monitor and observe teaching; they use the summative data to identify children who need additional support and gaps in learning.

Any child who needs additional practice has regular keep-up support, led by a fully trained adult. Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning. For more on phase 2, take a look at these Sound Cards or these phonics mini books Level 2. How can I make learning Letters and Sounds fun? By moving the colourful cards around on the table, turning it into a game, children will find learning phonics stimulating. This set covers Phases 2 to 5 of the curriculum. Find resources for the other phases here. This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.Children across Years 4 – 6 who need additional support will have regular 1:1 reading with decodable books. Weekly content grids map each element of new learning to each day, week and term for the duration of the programme. o Children in Reception are taught to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs, and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) with fluency and accuracy.

Alphabet sounds flashcards like these are specifically designed to teach children how to read through the use of phonemes and graphemes instead of memorising the individual letters. This follows the ideas behind the Letters and Sounds program by the Department for Education.

We ensure our Preschool pupils are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception. Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. The reading practice sessions have been designed to focus on three key reading skills: Children who are receiving additional phonics ‘keep-up’ sessions read their reading practice book to an adult daily.
