Love Makes a Family Donates Records to Yale: Connecticut’s Marriage Equality Story to be Preserved at Yale University," Yale University Library News, November 6, 2009, accessed December 19, 2009.

Each person has two families in their lives. One that they are brought up in, and one that they make themselves when they wed another. Love both the same, and you’ll see happiness in your life. A family is like the many small branches on a tree – you may all grow in different lengths and directions, but these branches are all interconnected with each other. But love, being an emotion, is not constant or guaranteed - especially if people are encouraged to take their feelings as reliable guides to decision-making. My wife taught in the public schools for 17 years, until 2016. She saw first-hand what living in a household theoretically defined by love meant to her second-graders - uncertainty as to their place in the family, strange men moving in and out of their single mother's home, "siblings" who came and went - or if in a traditional home of married mother and father, uncertainty as to whether or not love would leave and divorce break up the household. It was difficult to teach kids when they were never quite sure of what was going to happen next in their house. Writing a simple but compelling board book for toddlers isn’t easy. Ms. Beer did an excellent job of plainly stating what she thought the smallest members of society should know about the beautiful diversity of family life while also including deeper meanings for the adults or older kids who will be reading this out loud to the little ones in their lives. Everyone has a house, but it will not be a home without your family’s love and care. Home is where love is, now and always.

Work is important, but family is even more so. After all, when you start a family, they are the ones that you swore to protect. Put time aside for your family. Book: My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson Peete and Ryan Elizabeth Peete (Scholastic Press, 1 edition, 2010) Love Makes A Family. Book format is also like a large board book, so this is really a good "all ages" kind of book. pix) What We Love: This book highlights diverse families and kiddos, touching on gender identity and sexuality. Families like to spend time together. Different families have different rituals and traditions that they do together.

Book: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Peña (G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, 1 edition, 2015)What We Love: The story centers on Aidan, a trans boy, who shows the depth and complexity of gender identity. Aidan shows us there are many ways of being a boy, and there are many ways of being a kid. What We Love: Sierra’s drive to make it possible for her aunt to come and see one of her soccer games is inspiring. This board book is a good way to introduce the little ones to diverse and inclusive families. And it helps in normalizing families that are different from yours. With fabulous illustrations, simple one liners & by adding diverse & inclusive families author/illustrator @sophiebeerdraws has created a book every family can add to their shelf. Love your family and you’ll see that you can love anyone else. When you have happiness at home, you will find life to be so much more pleasant and beautiful. Additionally, students will be pushed to “read” the illustrations, noticing how illustrations in a text provide clues about events, settings, and characters. When discussing the text, students transition from focusing on clarifying and sharing their thoughts during a discussion to engaging with the thinking of others. Students learn how to build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others and asking questions to clear up confusion about the topics or texts under discussion.

This inclusive board book pairs repetition with diverse illustrations to showcase a broad range of families and how they show love. Ultimately, it is love and not gender that form a family. Ask the richest people in the world what their true priorities are, and they will tell you that it’s their family. Such is the importance of a family to everyone. Love Makes a Family: Gay Parents in the 90's by Daniel Veltri, Remco Kobus & Marla Leech (1991) at Fanlight Productions I literally know of no parents my own age or younger, who haven't - at the very least - done a shitton of self reflection and tried a different way, when they realized something they were doing (yelling, spanking, bribing, fawning, helicoptering, whatever) wasn't giving them the results - attentive kids, better communication, clean bedrooms, less spoiled brat behavior, etc - they were hoping for.Students will continue their exploration of character by analyzing the characters’ feelings. In this unit, students focus on more nuanced feelings and explaining why a character feels the way they do. Many of the vocabulary words in this unit do not come directly from the texts, but instead offer more precise words students can use to articulate how a character is feeling. Students will also analyze character relationships and notice how relationships impact a character's feelings and actions, particularly in regard to family relationships. Noticing both character feelings and character relationships will help students determine the central message of the story. Things to Know: While the author of this book is a white woman, it is still a lovely story featuring POC characters. Identity 5: I see that the way my family and I do things is both the same as and different from how other people do things, and I am interested in both. When I think about the kids we're raising, as a whole right now, I'm so goddamn hopeful for the future that I can't even really express it, for fear of losing my "unaffected internet witch" cool points (Note: I do not actually have any of those points). It is important that all students are able to learn about families that are similar to theirs as a way of validating and exploring their own identities. However, not all family experiences are highlighted over the course of the unit. Prior to teaching the unit, identify if any of your students have family types that are not represented and make a plan for how to bring their experiences into the unit.
