Starting in 2014, the game was developed by a team of around 150 based in Kyiv and Malta. The Exodus studio's main objective was to combine the core gameplay pillars of the Metro series with elements from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007), which prioritizes emergent gameplay and features a large, explorable space. The team experimented with open-world gameplay and excluded mission markers so that players can explore naturally. 4A collaborated with Glukhovsky on the game's story, which focuses more on Artyom's personal story and relationships, forgoing some of the supernatural elements found in previous games for a more grounded story. The question is whether 4A's ambitious 60fps gambit pays off? The answer is by and large 'yes', albeit with a caveat: as the game relies so heavily on dynamic resolution scaling, and because the content is so variable, there can be times where the 1080p and 512p minimums for Series X and Series S are not enough, resulting in performance drops. Thankfully, the frequency of this issue is limited - occurring just a handful of times in my playthroughs. Most of the time we are at a flat 60fps, though there can be some stutter during traversal, or when multiple enemies are on the move. I'm not sure what's causing these issues, but this is more noticeable than the drops seemingly caused by hitting the lower bounds of the dynamic resolution range. Although I did heap a bit of praise on Metro Exodus when it was originally released for its beautiful baked-in lighting, projected into the game world by light sources that are placed in there by design. Despite its other failings, Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition is a true visual showcase for this new wave of consoles and although it doesn’t quite reach the standard set by the PC version it’s not far from the mark. All of the ray-tracing goodness aside, the most immediately noticeable shift from previous versions is the bump-up to 60fps—a frame rate it holds without a sweat, from my experience. I feel like it’s a disservice to have ever released it at anything less. Metro Exodus on Xbox One X now feels like putting a two-stroke engine in a Lamborghini. Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition feels like a definitive next-gen experience for a game that, with regards to its technical application, was ahead of the console market at the time. Metro Exodus provides an immersive FPS experience that marks a new milestone for the franchise. Its survival-horror, sandbox and shooter elements are remarkably well balanced, constituting an engaging and thrilling game that’ll leave you no stranger to a good jump scare. The once linear horror franchise has been reformed, introducing expansive environments to indulge in without derailing the narrative. Metro Exodus is a must play. We also use the adaptive triggers to mimic resistance when rowing, operating some machinery, or driving Metro’s all terrain vehicle acquired in the Caspian desert.

As the name suggests, it is time to leave the underground that has housed our characters for some time, into a country that has been ruined by the war. Breathable air is hard to come by, and our main protagonist in Metro Exodus dreams of living somewhere where that is no longer an issue. Convinced that this dream can become a reality, he talks his wife, his father-in-law and a crew of soldiers into venturing out with him into the unknown.I will say upfront, I was wrong about Metro Exodus.
