About this deal

If I were to poll people in the street, I would guess that at least 85% of those I polled would at least know something about Minecraft. It’s been released on nearly every major console, including phones, and is the best-selling video game of all time, passing Tetris in May of 2019. I have played no more than three hours of Minecraft, but am familiar with the style based on playing many similar games such as Terraria. There are no points to be scored in the original Minecraft video game; the purpose is simply to explore and survive. This can all sound a little…well, dull to the uninitiated. But trust me, it’s a strangely entertaining game, especially when you play with friends. In Minecraft: Builders and Biomes , players earn points by building structures and creating large connected biomes of desert, forest, tundra, and mountain on their boards. They can also earn points by defeating mobs using weapons they have collected during the game. I have six kids ages 12 to 23, and even today we will play Minecraft together for hours and argue about our favorite characters over dinner. It’s a game that spans generations. Because of that, it’s a great game for moms to play with their kids (I do.) and it’s also a great game to incorporate into your teaching strategy whether you homeschool or teach in public school or the private sector.

Minecraft is one of those games that has managed to embed itself so deeply in popular culture that even if you haven’t played it before, chances are you’ll have some idea what it is. It has some solid strategic elements, but I don’t think these are complex enough to appeal to a broader audience. This is less a fault of the game itself and more a limitation of the original source material when translated into the medium of a board game. The game was first released in 2019 as a joint effort between Mojang Studios and Ravensburger, two highly experienced companies within the gaming industry. Its design can be attributed to Ulrich Blum, while the illustrators are Ninni Landin, Martin Johansson, and Martin Worister. Minecraft: Builders & Biomes is not a deep game, and it doesn’t try to be. It gives you some actions that can provide for alternate strategic routes. The theme fits, but the board game doesn’t feel like the open-world juggernaut that the video game is. The game is straightforward and at times a little too basic for anyone that has moved on from family games. For parents with kids that love the video game, Minecraft: Builders & Biomes should be a fun way for them to enjoy the intellectual property in a different form. Time to learn math facts with these Minecraft Multiplication Flash Cardsfrom Blessed Beyond a Doubt? So fun! We found a solution that was easier than handing it off and hoping that someone would want to design and draw completed Minecraft structures. Daniel and I sat down and wrote out suggestions for each of the biome, material, and feature combination. Maybe a mountain biome’s stone “feature” could be a rail station. We could see that in-game, and it’s easy enough to think a player might build that. Maybe the mountain’s obsidian feature could be a… dance floor? Hey, obsidian was hard, and players build on their own theme sometimes!

Printable Minecraft Activities for Writing Our employee playtesters were generous with their time, but all of this testing had to lead somewhere and we had a looming game design freeze deadline where no further changes could be made to the game’s mechanics. At this point, the biome tiles were still Minecraft screenshots, and the buildings were rectangular stand-ins that hinted at how they’d contribute to scoring. We needed art that let players know just what was going on in the game, which avenues of gameplay they should attempt, and how their efforts were progressing. Let's Art! Count the number of revealed hearts on these cards and compare it to the number of hearts on the mob card – if you have at least as many hearts, you defeat the mob. You can then place the mob card next to your player board and collect experience points. Collect a Weapon
