About this deal

For over three hundred years, the distinct and pure character of Mount Gay rums has come from distillation in traditional column and copper pot stills. A ground-breaking distillation technique in 1703, this process has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since.

Foursquare only produces three marques, one pot and two column, and only ages blends of both, though at high ABV. They focus on ageing and barrel management. Richard has only ever done two pure pot releases, both effectively unaged, one recently for Velier and one very early on that was sold to Scheer and reappeared last year. Howard, Randy (19 July 2007). "Mount Gay doubles sales in US market". Barbados Advocate. Archived from the original on 14 December 2007 . Retrieved 3 March 2010. OVER 65 visitors were in Barbados (17–21 February 2010) enjoying a welcomed break from their cold countries thanks to Remy Cointreau, the parent company of Mount Gay Rum. They have four pots of two similar types, so definitely can produce different marques, but I strongly suspect the Barbados culture works against them for that – Barbados likes low ABV blended rum and traditional production has accommodated that. At Mt Gay they focus on consistency for export, and they also significantly reduce prior to ageing which will limit their ability to make higher ABV releases for a long time, though they do age the pot and column marques separately so can do pure still releases as the origin series showed. Notes: Named after the year the distillery was founded (1703). This is Mount Gays premium rum. A blend of minimum 10 year old to 30 year old rums blended to show off their best product. Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost 250 ft deep well.

The island of Barbados is formed of coral limestone, a porous stone, which acts as a natural filter for the groundwater deep beneath the island. Thus filtered, this water is some of the purest in the world. Final Thoughts: Proof that rum can hold its own against other spirits as a respectable high end spirit. Lovely, complex but subtle, nuanced and a wonderful rum to sip and contemplate. I am aware of the fact that for many people the blending of pot and column rum and the resulting balance is what defines Bajan rum. I do not agree. Sure, it has developed that way over time, but the original style was born in pot stills The little red star on the image of the island on Mount Gay Rum's former bottle label represents the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown, not the location of the distilleries, which are actually in the northern part of the island. [8] [9] In the Bridgetown area, Mount Gay maintains the Mount Gay Rum Visitors Centre on the Spring Garden Highway in Brandons, St. Michael. [10] [11] The Mount Gay Visitor's Center is a tourist attraction that hosts several tours and events. [12]

Blending has been elevated into an art form: a complex alchemy that sits between expert intuition and controlled expertise. Allen Smith is the master of this craft of blending at Mount Gay. ABV rum from Barbados. This is the top rum from one of the oldest distilleries in the world, Mount Gay (outside of their specials). A blend of rums aged 10-30 years in American oak barrels. It is said that 55 different casks were used for the blend. My version is from 2018. The spirits world loves its superlatives, and Mount Gay can claim one of the most coveted. With a deed of sale for the original plantation dated Feb. 20, 1703, Mount Gay is the oldest continuously operating commercial rum producer in the world. The team at Mount Gay strongly suspects production was going on even earlier, and has recently uncovered a deed from 1654 that might seal the case. Today, Mount Gay produces the majority of Barbadian rum that is exported globally. Old Brigand is another locally popular brand, but it’s not nearly as exported. Hundreds of years ago, Mount Gay could rely on the molasses from local sugar cane for all of its needs, but that’s no longer the case as there simply isn’t enough available land anymore. In addition, while there used to be nearly 40 sugarcane refineries on the island, only one remains active today. So, although the distillery relies on sugarcane sourced from around the Caribbean, it only imports varieties that are native to Barbados.

Some of the blend is double distilled in copper pot stills and other parts distilled in a copper Coffey column still (a Coffey still is usually used for Irish whiskey) – then aged in ex bourbon oak casks for various periods of time then blended to profile. From a geological perspective, Barbados is different from volcanically formed Caribbean islands. Barbados is actually the product of accumulated and uplifted coral limestone. That means the island has lots of underground water, a key element in what makes Mount Gay unique and why the British decided to focus sugarcane and rum production here in the 17th century. The distillery and plantation grounds are home to a centuries-old, 300-plus-foot well. The water drawn from this well is still used for the distillate and dilution. There’s a virtuous Caribbean circle. Sipped the sweetness is dialled down a little. There is a nice spicy entry which is quite woody – ginger and a little hint towards a charred barrel and a little fire to the sweeter brown sugar and toffee notes.

John Sober inherited Mount Gilboa Plantation/Distillery from his father William Sandiford in 1747, and upon doing so he appointed Sir John Gay Alleyne as the manager. Sir John did such a good job at managing the plantation that it was renamed Mount Gay in his honor after his death in 1801. Fermentation really begins when molasses and filtered water from Barbados are combined with yeast (selected exclusively for Mount Gay). Since the distillery opened in the 18th century, this process has been conducted outdoors, under the Barbados sky. In the mouth: Confectionary and fruits! Very pleasant mouthfeel and very easy to drink. What I taste is very similar to the nose, except the cinnamon and vanilla are more vocal upfront. They’re also accompanied by an undertone of clove. Then I get mostly marzipan, dried apricots, butterscotch, toffee, orange peels, orange jam, lemon-flavored Nerds and honey. Some marzipan and coconut sugar syrup sneak up from behind too. Score: 6/10 Conclusions
