About this deal

The type of milk you choose to put on your cereal can also contribute to overall health - choosing semi-skimmed or skimmed instead of whole milk can reduce your overall fat intake for the day. Note: The breakfast cereals below are ranked by ingredients list only, not nutritional information as portion sizes on cereals are generally 30g/40g which is just unrealistic. The cereals are also ranked by total percentage of oats/wheat, as this should be the core component of any healthy breakfast cereal). 1. Porridge

This is a great one for the kids to help with. They love crushing the Weetabix. I tend to put the mixture in a small greased loaf tin and cook at gas 3 for about 1 hr 15 mins, until a knife comes out clean. It tastes great with a bit of butter and a cup of tea. Ingredients Yes, I know it’s not technically an ‘out of the box’ cereal (it takes a little prep work and hob/microwavery) but as porridge only takes a few minutes to make, it’s not too dissimilar.) 2. Shredded Wheat All categories have now been compared and the winner of the best cereal between Weetabix and Oatibix is – Weetabix. It took me a while to realise not all mueslis are healthy. I mean, they look healthy, but many varieties come with added sugar and fruit, making them just as bad as Cheerios.Granted, they could be better for you; maize sits higher on the glycemic index chart than slow-release wholegrain oats and wheat. It also has less than 90% maize and then the next ingredient is sugar. Because each cereal has a slightly different serving weight (for two biscuits), I’ve included weight-for-weight comparisons (per 100g) to ensure the data is as accurate as possible. Breakfast cereals tend to be based on grains - some are wholegrains (such as wheat, bran, oats), and others are refined grains (such as maize and rice). Many also have nuts, seeds and dried fruit added to them.

When it comes to choosing the best cereal for flavor, this is a subjective question, so I need to do a poll to get a broader opinion. Often hailed as the 'most important meal of the day', a decent breakfast for diabetes certainly has a range of health benefits. We've used the government colour coding system used by many companies to help consumers make informed choices about what they eat and drink (green = low; amber = medium; red = high). It depends. The mainstream brand is very good, with 77% total wheat, but there is still quite a bit of sugar.

Wholegrain cereals can help to manage blood glucose levels, particularly if you have type 2 diabetes, as they release glucose more slowly as they are low GI. No added sugar muesli contains a mixture of grains, fruit and nuts and the combination will differ between brands and varieties so the amount of oat beta glucans will be more variable than porridge, which is made only of oats. The dried fruit that is added should provide all the additional sweetness you need and will also count towards your five a day but choose a muesli with no added sugar and be aware that many fruit and nut mueslis (especially tropical fruit versions) contain sweetened dried fruit, which means they have sugar added even if it isn’t listed separately on the ingredients. Banana chips are another popular muesli ingredient that will contain added sugars and saturated fats. To stay as healthy as possible, just add milk or a plant-based alternative. It really shouldn’t need any more sugar – and if you feel like it should, then that’s a sign you need to redress that sugar tolerance. 7. Cornflakes As with porridge, be careful with your toppings. Many people sprinkle a few teaspoons of refined sugar on their shredded wheat – and this can cause early insulin spikes. Not good. Other cereals were found to have moderate to high amounts of sugar and fat. The cereals that score high in fat but low in saturated fat are ones in which the fat mainly comes from unsaturated sources.

Oat beta-glucan has been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease has many risk factors and altering one of these may or may not have a beneficial effect. Enjoy as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. One serving (2 biscuits) of Oatibix provides 1.8g of beta glucan soluble fibre from wholegrain oats, which is about 1 half of 3g, the suggested daily intake. These oatibix biscuits are high in oat fibre for a healthy gut, giving you an oatily great start to your day.* To clarify, this comparison relates to original Weetabix Biscuits and Oatibix Biscuits. Best for Calorie Content Sprinkle with Nuts, dust with Cocoa, coat with Yoghurt, top with Berries, have it your way & have it all year! As cereal-based foods, neither are low carbohydrate breakfast options, but if this is a consideration for you, Oatibix are slightly lower in carbs per weight. Cereal Type Both Weetabix and Oatibix are fortified with added vitamins and minerals to make them even healthier. The values in each category is very similar, with Weetabix being a little better because it has added iron, whereas Oatibix does not. Vitamin/Mineral Type However, cornflakes are an easily digestible breakfast food, which is why they’re so popular. But you also need a hell of a lot to feel full so, if you can, opt for a whole wheat or oats alternative. 8. Rice Krispies Multigrain The table below summarizes the winner for each category, to help you make an informed choice on which is best for you. Comparison Category Oatibix is fantastic on its own with cold or hot milk, or if you’re in the mood for a twist, why not try adding chopped fresh, dried fruit or a generous drizzle of honey.

Having said this, you should always aim for a fat/protein addition to any healthy breakfast, so peanut butter, nuts, seeds are all sound shredded wheat toppings. 3. Shreddies I loved Oatibix, ate it for years but recently after eating it, I’ve been getting stomach cramps and a hot tingling sensation in my arms and sometimes a feeling as if my throat was closing up - obvious allergic reactions. Then I discovered the dreaded “New Recipe” sign written on the box and that the oat content had been reduced in favour of the addition of Niacin amongst others. Here’s what the literature has to say about Niacin: It’s really down to personal preference but if these differences are important to you and your diet, then nutritionally it’s worth the switch to Weetabix. The rest of the ingredients are pretty much the same and include sugar, salt, and various vitamins and minerals. Original Weetabix IngredientsBoth Weetabix and Oatibix have a small amount of added salt, which is the same value for each cereal, making them joint winners in this category. Cereal Type One serving of Oatibix (2 biscuits) provides over half of your daily beta glucan which has been proven to lower cholesterol.* If fat content is a consideration for you and your diet, then the cereal with the least fat of the two is Weetabix which contains 6g less fat per 100g.
