Learn how to access and adjust the settings for the Outline Pen tool in CorelDRAW, which is used to change the appearance of lines and outlines. NOTE: if you activate the Outline Pen tool without having an object selected in the drawing window, the properties you set here will become the default for graphic objects you create later. Basic settings Even though all brushes can be scaled from small to large, I like the range that the monoline brush gives. I also like it because the small version of the monoline brush can serve such a different purpose than the larger version. As we saw with Procreate’s monoline brush, inking brushes are a GREAT choice for tracing and outlining your Procreate art. There are a few details that make a drawing pen different from a traditional ballpoint pen. First is their tip size. Ballpoint pens generally have a 1-millimeter tip, whereas drawing pens will have a finer tip. This allows them to create very precise lines. They also run very smoothly against your paper without scratching or making noise. The ink of a drawing pen tends to be more opaque and will not smudge or bleed through the paper, as well.
We are going to work with a standard brush provided by Procreate. To select a brush go to the “Brush Library” which is the brush icon on the top right side of your toolbar. After locating the brush, duplicate it. Duplicate the brush once more. We want 3 of the same brush, the original brush + 2 Copies. For Mac users, the Outline tools can’t be added to the toolbox, but you can access the same settings on the Outline tab of the Properties inspector. There are brushes for hatching, wispy strokes, shading, and more. This is in addition to all of the great pencil brushes they offer for tracing. Note that cuttable outlines do not print when identified by the RIP or Print-Cut device. If you want to make the outlines printable, you can use the Object Shaping Boundary command. For more information, see To create a boundary around selected objects. To specify line and outline settings Our first outlining and tracing brush is already included with your Procreate app! It’s a popular brush that you may already be familiar with – the monoline brush.There’s even a Salt Watercolor brush that can give you a grungy, smooth, watery line that is quite the showstopper when used for an outline. For the purposes of tracing and outlining, you’ll want to focus on the monoline brushes (all 8 of them!), the large fill brush, and the tight pencil sketch brush. You can also adjust the Stretch and Angle values by dragging in the Nib shape preview box. To set the line and outline properties for new objects You can set the miter limit to determine the corner shape in objects containing lines that meet at sharp angles. Corners with angles above the miter limit are pointed (mitered); corners with angles below the miter limit are beveled (squared off). Ok, so you may have noticed that we’ve only talked about ink pens so far. I love ink pens because they’re versatile. You can easily use them for both outlining and tracing.
We need to combine the 2 copies of our brush. To do this, select both copies, and next to the wording “Brush Library” you will see the (+) symbol is replaced with “Combine” and “Delete”. Tap on “Combine” and then tap on the combined brush. This will give you a LOT of great ink brushes you can use for tracing and outlining, while also saving you from being overwhelmed with choices. At this point, your brush stroke will no longer show on the drawing pad, but don’t panic we will fix it now. With the secondary brush still selected in your settings panel head to “Properties”. In Properties, under “Brush behavior” adjust the “Maximum Size” lower. As you start lowering the max size you will see the Primary brush showing as an outline.Funnily enough, a lot of calligraphy brushes ARE pressure sensitive, but the monoline brush is one of the few that isn’t.
Looking at Procreate’s default brushes, it’s probably no surprise that the technical pencil wins the award for one of the best pencil brushes to use for tracing. When tracing or making outlines, you don’t want the size of your stroke to change as your draw. That would be a nightmare! You can also change the outline width of a selected object by typing a value in the Outline width box on the property bar. To create a calligraphic outline When you draw with the monoline brush, it’s a solid stroke that has no texture or frills. This makes it a perfect brush for creating inconspicuous lines for tracing, or beautifully clean lines for your outlines. There are some key characteristics about the monoline brush that make it a great outlining and tracing brush. Most of the brushes on this list will have these qualities as well, so let’s go over them now.Now it’s time to test our Outline brush. I’m going to write Design Bundles in a script style without lifting my pencil. This gives me a continuous outline effect. If you lift your pencil you will have overlapping strokes, if this happens you can always erase the overlapping lines to give a continuous stroke effect. The small monoline brush can be great for delicate or discrete tracing or outline work. On the other hand, the larger monoline brush is anything but delicate and discrete. It’s a great choice for bold outlines that make a statement.
Different corner styles were applied to the upper and lower row of triangles. Different line caps were applied to the lines in the upper-right corner. Arrowheads were applied to the lines in the lower-right corner. With that in mind, this Digital Ink Brush Set is a wonderland of Procreate tracing and outlining brushes. Not all of the brushes are appropriate for tracing and outlining, but the extra brushes are a ton of fun.
Step 1 - Duplicate a Brush
While the technical pencil brush is my go-to for Procreate tracing pencil brushes, any of the pencil brushes can work for you, depending on your needs. To demonstrate the Outline tools, we’ll start with a simple rectangle. From the Outline Tools tool group, choose the Outline Pen tool. Please note: we have the latest version of Procreate 5X.
