About this deal

With a pre-alert beep to warn you it’s almost time to remove your dish, this gadget then gives a ‘ready’ alert, times a three-minute resting period for the meat and also sounds an alarm if you’ve left

Temperature accuracy and range:Look for thermometers that are advertised with accuracy within ±2˚F, which is a range of accuracy most good thermometers can promise. This will help you ensure food safety as well as preferred doneness. With only one volume setting, it's harder to hear if you're more than 10 feet away (or if you happen to be in another room), but for the most part, that wasn't an issue. Most importantly, it had a very accurate temperature reading for every test we put it through. For the build quality and performance, we found this to be an affordable and reliable option that's worth every penny. ThermoWorks has been acclaimed for its kitchen thermometers for years, and when we put 12 popular models to the test, we instantly understood why: its thermometers were some of the best performers. The best overall meat thermometer for most people would be the new ThermoWorks Thermapen One, an instant-read model that truly lives up to the word “instant,” while also being nearly lab-accurate and loaded with more functionality than you might expect from such a small, simple device. The Lavatools Javelin isn’t quite small enough to attach to your keychain, but it’s close. Measuring just under 4.5 inches when closed, it’s far and away the shortest instant-read thermometer we tested. You won’t have to worry about it cluttering up your utility drawer, that’s for sure. (Although since it has integrated magnets, you can hang it up somewhere and not worry about its drawer presence at all.) One thing we would like is having an option to customize our timer, and we also found that the alarm settings were only audible through the app—there's no sound functionality on the device itself. This is a great option for anyone who is really into smart gadgets, offering a high-tech experience with a pretty accurate reading right in the palm of your hand. But that’s all Gaviscon under the bridge since I tested the best meat thermometers, which tell me exactly when any joint of meat or fish dish is perfect. Donna Currie, a seasoned food writer, cookbook author, and recipe developer, has tested hundreds of products for us over the past seven years. She's home-tested multiple wireless thermometers over the years, and did a side-by-side test in 2021. Of those, she continues to frequently use the same MEATER Plus at the grill and in the oven, a testament to its long-term durability. The accuracy of each meat thermometer was compared against a platinum-resistant industrial standard thermometer. These are used both for precision measurements of the highest accuracy and for routine industrial work. The display doesn’t rotate or light up, two features that are much missed, but is to be expected at this budget price point. The thermometer is also powered by a 3-volt CR2032 battery, rather than one or two ultracommon AAA batteries, like every other model we looked at. We then enlisted the thermometers for an all-day cooking marathon, roasting four-pound slabs of top sirloin until they reached medium rare. For instant-read and clip-on thermometers, we also deep-fried French fries and tortilla chips, in each case using multiple units to compare accuracy and usability. Along the way, we tried as many of the thermometers’ special features (such as temperature alarms or mobile apps) as possible, so we could mimic how they would function in the real world.

A meat thermometer will tell you when the inside of your joint, steak or fillet has hit the right temperature for the type of food – avoiding the need to cautiously overcook, or risking undercooking, which can lead to illness. Not only does this result in cooking consistency, it also allows you to choose the right level of “doneness”, making that perfectly pink-in-the-middle leg of lamb achievable. The large temperature range goes from 14 to 572 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect to use with a wide variety of cooking methods. The Bluetooth connection functioned well for about 30 yards outdoors, and bit less indoors if there are walls separating you from the thermometer. Overall, we were pretty impressed with the functionality and accuracy of this model and couldn't find much to complain about, especially at this price. Pre-set with safe temperatures for food set by the US Department of Agriculture, you can choose between one setting for both beef and veal, then lamb, pork and poultry. The open setting means you can also store your own setting for use with a favourite recipe – for me, I tried 145 degrees for salmon steaks which came out just as the family like them.

The OXO Good Grips Chef’s Precision Leave-In Meat Thermometer reminds me a lot of the kind of the meat thermometer my parents had while I was growing up — but it’s even easier to use and read. The textured bottom of the probe tells you exactly how far into the meat it needs to be inserted, and the 2.6-inch-diameter meter is easy to read, with temperature waypoints every 10 degrees between 120 and 200, markings in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, large type, and even a basic guide to safe cooking temperatures right on the dial. The slide-off probe cover contains the same numbers, plus explanations of the temperatures at which you can expect to hit medium rare, medium, and well done for a variety of different meats. As the product’s name suggests, OXO gives you a good grip on meat cooking. Design: We took into consideration each model's probes, the ability to read the digital display, button placement and labeling, and magnet attachment or any other characteristics that made it easy to use.
