I had never read about the Salem witch trials before, and I don’t read much from that time period, so it really intrigued and immersed me. While this series is about love at its core, I found this book to be very much about mothers and daughters too.Returning home, Sally discovers Jimmy's spirit has possessed Gillian's body. Gary sees Jimmy's spirit emerge. Jimmy tries possessing Gary, but is turned aside by his silver badge. Sally tells Gary he is there because of her spell, the feelings they have for each other are not real, and the family curse will kill him if they pursue a relationship. Gary replies that curses only work if one believes in them, before returning to Tucson. The Book of Magic, the conclusion of the Practical Magic series, begins when Aunt Jet hears the deathwatch beetle, knows she has only seven days to live, and feels that she has so much to do with her remaining time. Readers are introduced again to Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny; Uncle Vincent; Sally and Gillian; and Sally’s children, Kylie and Antonia.

To an extent, Sally and Gillian’s neighbors couldn’t be blamed for their hostile reactions, because their aunts did nothing to dissuade suggestions that they were witches. If anything, they encouraged this talk. Sally and Gillian suffered the consequences and so after a while, they decided that they would escape the family name and all the rumors that came with it. When Maria is abandoned by him after he impregnates her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts, where he is a judge in the witch trials. En route, she falls for the kind Jewish sailor. The Aunts were great and I loved having them come to Sally’s house, again having them come to the suburbs, it was truly great, and such a different vibe than I expected after seeing the movie first.

Practical Magic is the second book that I’ve read from Alice Hoffman. I read her 2016 release Faithful last fall and fell in love with it, so my sister, who is a huge Alice Hoffman fan, loaned me this book as well as several other Hoffman novels. Its sequel took more than two decades to finally see the light of day, and yet Alice Hoffman’s fans were no less enthusiastic to return to the world that the first Practical Magic novel introduced. Composer Michael Nyman said he wrote an entire score for "Practical Magic" that was not used in the movie — instead, the studio chose a score by Alan Silvestri.
