The be quiet! Pure Base 500DX is all about cooling, and the front mesh panel is glorious for hot PC builds. Another potential error with fan configuration would be to install all the system fans as intakes, so for this setup, we switched all four 120mm fans to intake making it difficult for warn air to exhaust out of the case.

For all who strive for maximum performance and especially with water-cooled systems, the Pure Base 500DX White with its extremely air-permeable front and top cover is the right choice. The dust filters on the front and bottom are easy to remove for cleaning. With this in mind, we would suggest when using a PC case of this type, to install the system fans to slightly favour a positive pressure airflow configuration for the optimal compromise between system temperature and dust levels. To create a positive pressure fan configuration you will need slightly more intake fans or higher intake flowrate than exhaust.

Now, on to the messy portion of this review. The 15 cable tie points are great, as are the four cable straps, but with only 25 mm of clearance to route everything, this was the most frustrating part of this build. The SSD tray that mounts over the CPU cut-out was fine, but the one that showcases the SSD from the left side of the case was difficult to work with. Connecting two SATA power plugs and two SATA data connectors in that small of an area was quite the chore. If you plan on using this feature, I would highly advise using cables with 90° ends wherever you can. Also, if you try to remove this plate after you’ve routed the motherboard 20+4 pin connector, it’s just not going to happen. The be quiet! Pure Base 500DX is also superbly easy to work in and an excellent choice for beginners looking to get into building their first PC, as well as seasoned enthusiasts who don’t want to spend too much time on assembly. Thanks to excellent materials and manufacturing, whoever you are, the Pure Base 500DX will deliver an end result that looks stunning and approaches a premium feel. All fans intake: 2 x 120mm front, 1 x 120mm top and 1 x 120mm rear all pulling air into the system. Setting up a balanced pressure fan configuration means equal intake and exhaust fans. For this setup, we used two 120mm fans at the front of the case as intakes and two 120mm fans as exhausts, one rear-mounted and one top mounted. The front panel dust filter cannot be removed without first removing the panel. This is an oversight I'm baffled with, as so much attention to detail is present with the rest of the case. Keeping your filters clear of dust is incredibly essential for maximum performance and low noise, which is something I'd expect be quiet! to be champions at encouraging.

To accurately measure the effect various airflow configurations have on system temperature, we devised a simple testing procedure. A prolonged stress test is performed on the system using the various fan configurations set out above to ensure the system reaches its steady-state temperature. Three preinstalled Pure Wings 2 fans with airflow-optimized fan blades that ensure perfect airflow and cooling. Despite the compact case design the fans at the front, top and rear are 140mm models, resulting in very quiet operation. Up to two 140 mm fans can be installed in addition. The case offers lighting in two places: the front panel features a pair of frosted ARGB light bars and the inside has a single light strip that provides a subtle, yet pleasing ambiance. What other manufacturers might call a cable management bar has been dubbed an “SSD panel” by be quiet!. This panel is designed to hold two SSDs so that they’re visible from the interior of the case, but with their cables hidden behind a removable plastic insert bearing the be quiet! logo. As cable management bars go, this isn’t our favorite, but bear in mind that it is completely removable by loosening a single captive thumbscrew and that there are plenty of other SSD mounting locations. The main problem is that the cable gap along the edge of the panel routes cables at a right angle. That’s great for boards that have their 24-pin power connectors pointing out from the edge of the board, like EVGA’s Dark series, but it makes it more difficult to route cables into other things, like normally-oriented 24-pin connectors or PCIe power cables. There are also no cable tie points anywhere on the SSD panel, which is something of a missed opportunity, although there are plenty elsewhere. Accounting for the space taken up by noise-damping foam, there’s about 2cm of clearance between the motherboard tray and the side panel for routing cables.
