About this deal

Any decent and sharp blade is suitable for knife sharpening a pencil. Even here in the UK with our much stricter knife laws, I can carry a diminutive Spyderco Bug and sharpen pencils to my heart’s content. The Handheld Sharpener The fine, sharp point on the left is suitable for drawing, the normal point on the right (shown as being slightly blunt) is for writing. All of the options so far for pencil sharpening have assumed a level of convenience, privilege, and access to material goods. What if you have none of that? What if you find yourself, in the wilderness, in dire need of notation with nothing but your wits and an unsharpened pencil at your disposal? You get a lot of cheap plastic sharpeners that do not offer anything but frustration. A good quality sharpener should be made from metal and have two sharp blades.

By their nature, they tend to be larger, more unwieldy, and better suited to static applications. There are some smaller, more portable options, but I find it best to relegate them to home, office, or shop use. What It Produces You might be reading this and thinking, ‘surely there’s only one way to sharpen a pencil?’ — in which case, prepare for your eyes to be opened to a whole new world! M&R’s Pollux Long Point Brass Pencil Sharpener has a unique concave design that sharpens pencils to an extra long, super fine point. Many artists and creatives enjoy using mechanical sharpeners because they feel in control of the process — they can stop turning the handle when they like, and there is often a way to choose the type of point required.

3.      An electric pencil sharpener

Electric Sharpeners can use either a blade or helical sharpening mechanism, but the whole process is powered by electricity. These sharpeners require very little in the way of manual work – all you need to do is insert your pencil and let the machine do the rest. These heavy duty sharpeners are perfect for artists who use pencils daily, or for those who just don’t want to waste time manually sharpening their pencils. It’s pretty easy to sharpen a high volume of pencils with these sharpeners. A sharp pencil can provide precision when drawing details, and it can help with shading effects when using the sides. So, when writing or drawing, a sharpened pencil improves the whole experience. Keeping a pencil sharp can also prevent the pencil lead from breaking, which means you can use the pencil for longer. Due to their size, mechanical pencil sharpeners aren’t ideal for carrying with you when drawing or writing outside of the home, but they do an excellent job in the home. These are usually desk-bound and easy to use. Since you are not manually sharpening the pencil with both hands, the point created produces a neater line. However, because it is so fast, it can also cause irregular sharpening and there is less control over the process. You must use a pencil that is of good quality, with the graphite placed in the center. If it is off-center, it can be difficult to sharpen the pencil into a normal conical point. The pencil must also be straight and not bent or bowed in any way. Popular among most artists because they catch the shavings neatly in one place and it is more difficult to hold the pencil at an incorrect angle with these sharpeners.

Always use a high-quality manual sharpener and not cheap plastic sharpeners if you want good results. Sharpeners come in all different shapes, styles, and colours. You can choose a sharpener that catches the shavings, a desktop sharpener, an open sharpener, or an electric pencil sharpener. Whatever type of sharpener you need, you can rely on Ryman®. Our range is complete with all of the pencil case accessories you'll need for school, work, or home, from some of the top brands like Milan, Staedtler, Faber-Castell, and Helix. A craft knife is recommended for the sharpening of charcoal pencils, pastel pencils, and carbon pencils.

Made especially for soft pencils such as pastels, these sharpeners have a shallower angle intended for pencils with these sort of cores. You can then apply slight pressure with the blade. Push the knife with your thumb, the knife should be stationary. The hand holding the pencil can adjust the pressure and speed at which you work. Apply shallow strokes, which should produce quite a few shavings as you go. Eventually, the lead should be exposed.
