About this deal

The Mac Ride mounts between the headset and the seat post, so the seat’s placement is independent of the slope of the top tube. However, with bikes with deeply sloped top tubes or step-through frames, it eliminates your ability to step through the frame.

Today we’re taking a closer look at the all-new Shotgun Pro MTB Child Seat from biker-owned brand ‘Kids Ride Shotgun’ who are a small team of mountain bike parents from the North Island of New Zealand who came together with a global vision to raise the next generation of mountain bikers. The shotgun seat doesn't fit e-mtb's because of the variance between the top tube and the down tube being too great. We have had a handful of customers who have modified their shotgun seat to fit their e-mtb, but that's not something we can recommend. Can I use the shotgun seat on my carbon frame? As a result, there are absolutely pros and cons with each style of seat. There are risks with all front mounted child bike seats, and the best seat for your family really depends on your child’s age and temperament, your riding ability, and where and how you will be using the seat. If you plan on using either the Do Little, Shotgun or Mac Ride on “non-mountain bikes” be sure to be aware of their limitations. The seat is made from smooth, soft rubber, and has soft shoulder padding too. It’s very ergonomic and fits our two-year-old toddler comfortably. It also has a minimalistic, modern design, with an integrated drainage system for rainwater, and comes in nine beautiful colours (the Chigusa green special edition is particularly lovely). We love that the entire seat detaches from the base which is fitted to the bicycle: a convenient feature for when you want to store it away. The Shotgun Pro seat is suitable for dropper posts and all common seat post sizes, including 27.2mm, 30.9mm, 31.6mm and 34.9mm. Fitting requires 14mm of available seat post space. The unique cradling “u-shaped” saddle of the Mac Ride was a big hit with our testers as it helped to keep riders firmly on the saddle during more aggressive rides. The Mac Ride does not offer mini handlebars, but does offer optional small grips that you can mount on the inside of your grips. It is also the only mountain bike kids seat on this list that offers a height-adjustable footrest. Now take a look at this comparison of Carrie and her daughter on the Shotgun Pro and the original Shotgun. The original Shotgun seat is about 1.5″ lower to the ground on Carrie’s bike, and will give her significantly more room to lean forward and get low while climbing or descending. It will also provide much needed wiggle room for her little wiggle worm to move around without interfering with mama.

However, the main selling point, and one that will strike a chord hardest with bike mad parents, is that a front-mounted seat is far more FUN! Now able to interact safely with your handlebar, stand-up and lean with you into corners, your toddler will love the dynamic riding position. Your child will howl with laughter, getting the same buzz as you do when you ride. Yes, rear-mounted child seats are a good way of transporting your child, a front-mounted child seat makes transporting your child fun. When can I start using a front-mounted MTB child seat? How to take your young child on your bike when they’re not old enough to pedal themselves has long been a problem for many parents, especially if you want to get out on the mountain biking trails. You can leave them behind, but it’s great to think you could share your passion for MTB with your child from a young age. What we all need is a way to be able to take your child on your mountain bike with you! More info thule.com The Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini is the best way to start your toddlers trail riding adventures from as young as 12 months. Your child will love riding up front when they have their own handlebars and grips to hold onto. The shotgun bars provide a warmer alternative for little hands, and stop your co-pilot from playing with your gears, brakes and dropper post!IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE FOR THE ORIGINAL SHOTGUN: If your down tube is wider than your top tube, the metal legs will bow out and bend as you screw on the foot pegs at the bottom of the legs. This is normal. We initially thought we had ruined our seat by bending those legs, but we verified with Kids Ride Shotgun that this should be expected. We did not experience this on the 2.0. Whether you’re looking for a traditional front-mounted baby bike seat or a new “no-harness” front toddler seat, we’ve tested all the options and have all the intel to help you make the best decision for your child and your bike. You want the child to sit as low as possible on the frame. On most mountain bikes, the Do Little sits slightly lower than the others.

The Do Little includes an adapter to allow it to easily mount to these different styles of bikes, which not only allows the seat to sit lower on the bike, but makes getting on and off the bike much easier for the adult. The Pro attaches at two points to your bike – the headset and the seat post. You just need to secure the Shotgun Pro’s front clamp to the headset and rear clamp to the seat post. If you’re looking for the cream-of-the-crop front child bike seat, the Thule RideAlong Mini is it. High-quality and durable like other Thule seats, comfort and best-fit is where the RideAlong Mini really shines.

The Shotgun Pro includes two spacers, for use on two bikes. Installing the Shotgun Pro spacer replaces 10mm of standard steerer spacers on your bike. The Shotgun seat is made to fit any mountain bike and to suit children 2-5 years of age. It has a large range of adjustment and is rubber padded to protect your frame. Share your love of riding with your children with this safe, simple and easy to use seat! In the images below you can see how the child’s helmet is close to Carrie’s chin, but falls a few inches lower on Brian’s chin. (And realistically, this is Carrie’s bike and Brian could actually sit a bit higher than this on his own bike, increasing that space even more.) With a child this size, the Shotgun Pro is still a fine fit for Brian, but not as much for Carrie.

Headset (Total Spacer Height): In our testing, we discovered that the total number and the total height of the spacers under your stem will also impact fit. Once the Shotgun Pro spacer is installed, there must be clearance between the Shotgun Pro’s front clamp and your stem when the handlebars rotate. This video is a helpful guide for setting up the shotgun seat, but does not replace the fitting instructions, safety information and disclaimer included with every seat – which you must read before installation. I can recall how a balance bike seemed to just make so much more sense than stabilisers. I recall how I wished I’d come across the idea sooner and my first child had had the benefit that his younger siblings had. With these changes Lauren set out for some downhill shuttle rides to test the performance of the seat. She was pleasantly surprised by her experience as those minor adjustments made for an incredible riding experience! It felt safer, more playful, and way more comfortable. For Lauren, the child sitting lower is a big deal as she is a shorter rider and loves a good downhill shuttle ride with her little one (I mean pedaling extra weight uphill isn’t always the most fun).
