About this deal

Wow! This was so absolutely terrible! Why do you always polarise me Gaiman? Sometimes I love what you do and at other times I absolutely hate it. I just have no middle ground with you. They fall asleep whatever they are doing, and they do not wake up,” said the sot. “Look at us. We fled the towns to come here. We have brothers and sisters, wives and children, sleeping now in their houses or cowsheds, at their workbenches. All of us.”

The Sleeper and the Spindle: How to Combine Text and Image The Sleeper and the Spindle: How to Combine Text and Image

This Christmas' offering was a radio play adaptation of The Sleeper and the Spindle, a book I really enjoyed reading. Also, the prince deserved better than getting ghosted. There was nothing in the story that says he was anything other than a good guy. <--doesn't mean she needs to love him, but it does mean he should get more than a lifetime of wondering if his fiancee got eaten by a bear.

Pupil reviews

See Neil speaking about his new novel, Fortunately, the Milk, a time-travelling adventure for young readers featuring aliens, dinosaurs, volcano gods and a pint of milk that saves the universe! And we can't forget the one thing which made me adore this book the most! THE GIRL POWER. Who needs a Prince to wake you up with a kiss whilst he parades around in his clinking armour, riding on his mighty pale steed? Why can't a Queen, a beautiful and incredibly courageous young woman (one you might have seen somewhere else before!) save the day? If you've ever wished that Prince had stayed home and let his fiancée be the hero instead, this book IS FOR YOU. Go and buy this book today. Be that Queen and go and wake up that Princess yourself!

On the whole, I liked this book but also realised something rather interesting - this book contained a whole lot of different fairy stories, for example Sleeping Beauty [sleeper], Snow White [dwarves]. The only part I found creepy was when all the people were coated in spider webs! I wonder what the queen felt like that time? It has elements of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, set in an echo of Middle Earth, led by the women who are largely absent in Tolkien's world, plus (male) dwarfs. All are nameless, the better for us to know them, and maybe be them.Twisting together the familiar and the new, this delicious, captivating and darkly funny tale shows its creators at the peak of their talents and was the winner of the 2016 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. Adaptational Badass: Snow White in her original story was The Ingenue and a naive teenager with no survival skills. It's unclear if in this story she was always like that but by the time she sets off to prevent an enchanted sleep, she arms herself with a chainmail and sword. The first thing you should know: this is NOT a lesbian retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I'm sure you've all seen the Chris Riddell illustration of Snow White kissing Sleeping Beauty awake by now, and will have seen this book lauded as LGBT representation. It is not. Gaiman is very much hit or miss with me. I sometimes feel like he goes off on rambling tangents and I do not care to traipse along with him. But how much trouble can he get into with a short story?

Weaving together hints of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty with a shimmering thread of dark magic, this twist on classic fairytales will hold readers spellbound from start to finish. I got this book from the library but I can tell you it is going to be added to my bookshelves as I must have it. The story is so different and dark and good. The graphics are AMAZING! I liked the way the illustrator drew the pictures with no colours, but included tints. I liked the cross-hatching instead of bright neat colours, the illustrator had used some incredible drawing skills. I admired how the author thought about the inscrutable, magical and deep forest. Furthermore, I think the characters are stunning and amazing, and the queen was able to save the sleeper and travel through all of those terribly sharp thorns that tried to get in her way.Wow! Another exciting Neil Gaiman book! I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. The best part was that all the leading characters were strong, powerful and determined women, even if some were good and some were evil! My favourite character was the aueen. Brave and resilient, she battles through numerous challenges and sacrifices herself to save her people. A brand new BBC Radio adaptation of Neil Gaiman's award-winning fairytale, merging Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to enchanting effect We find out all is not as it seems as the Beauty wakes up. There is evilness afoot!! But alas, things are set to rights and the Queen and her dwarfs set out on their way... but the Queen is unsure of what she wants... urn:lcp:sleeperspindle0000gaim_c2g0:epub:846aed25-212a-4851-802e-79fe9fe921d8 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier sleeperspindle0000gaim_c2g0 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t06z1ps27 Invoice 1652 Isbn 0062398245 I have enjoyed reading The Sleeper and the Spindle as it was very mysterious and interesting. In some parts of the book the description of the scene was so powerful that it made me feel as if I were really there! However, the book was also very frightening and creepy. I did not find that very amusing but the book still had its own jokes which made it bearable to read.

Adaptational Villainy: The enchantress manages to be even worse than in the original version. Instead of cursing the princess purely out of spite, she deliberately drains her youth and beauty over several decades, and builds herself an army of enslaved sleeping victims to take over the world; plus her curse forces the princess to remain awake for all those years, powerless to escape or do anything to stop her tormentor.I really wanted to see that build/emotional development and the was absolutely nothing. Hugely disappointed. It would be the end of her life, she decided, if life was a time of choices. In a week from now, she would have no choices. She would reign over her people. She would have children. . . . the path to her death, heartbeat by heartbeat, would be inevitable (14). This is a 3+ week Writing Root using The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell in which children explore and discuss fairytales and how this fairytale subverts the genre. They go on to create a number of varied written outcomes using the text as a starting point including narratives, dialogue, character descriptions, setting descriptions (estate agents’ adverts), and diary entries before using the ideas and authorial devices identified within the text to plan, draft, edit and publish their own subverted fairytale using the idea of The Queen and the Glass Coffin to write a sequel.
