About this deal

The solid graphite pencil also referred to as a woodless pencil, is a pencil that consists of solid graphite without the wooden casing like a normal pencil.

If you are thinking about freehand drawing you're maybe thinking about simply doodling around in your school exercise book. This type of pencil is very effective in producing characters that appear less shiny due to the amount of clay that it contains.

Also known as non-photo blue pencils, the non-reproducing types make marks that are not reproducible by photocopiers [48] (examples include "Copy-not" by Sanford and "Mars Non-photo" by Staedtler) or by whiteprint copiers (such as "Mars Non-Print" by Staedtler). Manufactures like Doman and Scripto developed a ballpoint pen that used liquid graphite which allowed the user to erase the marks and writing. The first attempt to manufacture graphite sticks from powdered graphite was in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1662.

Although these woods sharpen with minimal splintering, they are harder woods and may contain some imperfections. You can use an 8B pencil to complete an entire drawing as long as you aren’t trying to create any highlights or mid-tones. This means that you can smudge darker and softer pencils on the B scale a lot better than harder ones. The numeric graphite scale uses numbers such as 1, 2, 3, or 4 to represent how hard a pencil’s core is. The favoured timber for pencils was Red Cedar as it was aromatic and did not splinter when sharpened. For example, if more clay is used in the mixture, then the marks made will be much lighter and harder.
