About this deal

While the limited viewing angles and average sound quality are drawbacks, these can be mitigated with a soundbar and careful placement of the television. The 55QA5D63DB’s Dolby connection extends to Dolby Atmos audio decoding too, while its onscreen menus include a surprisingly broad range of picture set-up options – including various tweaks for Toshiba’s proprietary ‘Tru’ Picture Engine video processor. As Toshiba’s flagship TV for 2022, it includes all three of the Japanese manufacturer’s TRU Picture Engine technologies: TRU Resolution, TRU Micro Dimming and TRU Flow.

Quantum Dot Technology and Dolby Vision™ HDR, combined with our TRU picture technology provide brighter highlights, darker blacks and over 1 billion colour shades for refined and realistic viewing, whatever you’re watching. This is especially true, unexpectedly, with Toshiba’s Cinema preset, which for various other reasons, as we’ll see, is definitely your best all-round option ahead of the default Natural preset. There does seem to be some support for the ALLM switching feature that can switch TVs into their fast-response Game mode whenever a game source is detected, but this doesn’t work as consistently during our tests as it should.

When it comes to supported content, the young at heart will be happy to find Twitch and TikTok apps on the 50UK4D63DB’s app list, and those six direct app access buttons on the remote are welcome shortcuts. However, other televisions may be a better fit if you require a wider viewing angle or more advanced smart TV functionality. The 50UK4D63DB also follows its 50UK3163DB predecessor in achieving a genuine 4K feeling with the sharpness and detail density of its pictures.

Our resident Xbox Series X detects the 55QA5D63DB as capable of operating in Dolby Vision HDR mode while gaming, but warns that this mode will likely be affected by high levels of latency. The television has a 4K Ultra HD display with HDR technology, which delivers stunning and lifelike images. Experience the best stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic in one place with the top streaming apps, including Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Freeview Play, built in as standard. The speakers are sensitive enough to present even the subtlest of audio details with conviction and presence, while dialogue is clear and intelligible at all times, no matter how much of a racket there might be going on behind it. We’re not talking about brightness levels to rival those of any current premium TVs, of course, be they OLED or LCD.

Plus, with Chromecast built-in™, you can easily cast your favourite movies, music, and more to your TV.

The tech’s main advantage is greater luminosity and better color coverage compared to what you’d expect from a regular LED display.

Three HDMIs dominate rather than the four you can generally expect if you step up a couple of hundred pounds, and none of these three HDMIs supports the latest premium gaming features of 4K/120Hz or VRR. Using no backlight at all, OLED panels are self-lit, meaning they're ultra-thin, instantly responsive and can replicate black levels far better than QLED or standard LED ever could. The Toshiba UF3D has a range of calibration options, including color calibration and gamma calibration. The two desktop feet set towards each corner if you’re not wall hanging the TV feature an attractive blade design that means they all but disappear if you’re looking at the TV straight on. In fact, content levels are high, especially as Toshiba has also brought on board Freeview Play to cover Android TV’s blind spots when it comes to the catch-up apps for some of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters. The low input lag ensures minimal delay between the controller and the on-screen action, resulting in a more immersive gaming experience. As the UK bit of its name suggests, the Toshiba 50UK4D63DB is only available in the UK, with no similar variants to be found in other territories.
