About this deal

There have been some discrepancies with TCL’s more formal naming of its products, with several variations on the usual system seen around the regions as the company continues to expand into European and American markets. The C635 marks the first occasion on this list where the UK models switch to Android TVs, while the European versions continue to run Google as their Smart TV platform.

One that won’t be made familiar to everyone, the RC630K is a UK-exclusive QLED running Roku TV that is likely to be available from September (or shortly thereafter). The 55C735K marks a watershed moment for TCL’s fortunes in the European market as it finally sees the brand managing to combine a feature count that embarrasses many much more expensive TVs with some properly decent picture and sound quality. We measured the peak brightness on the TCL C735 to be 365 nits in the most accurate Movie preset to D65 white. As we do with all reviews, we factory reset the TCL C735 and then measured the picture presets to find which is the most accurate to the industry standards out-of-the-box so we can view content as it was mastered and intended to be seen. We must highlight the inclusion of improvements for the image, which work on essential parameters for a more precise experience. This latter change also stops dark scenes from looking unstable, as the TV isn’t working so distractingly hard to continually adjust its light output in response to changes in image content. but it also works correctly and allows us to play videos, photos and music, although the main attraction is the possibility of recording content. We are reviewing the 55-inch version of the TCL C735 and given other screen sizes use similar panels, performance should be reasonably similar, but we cannot guarantee that will be the case given the usual differences in LCD panel to panel. The P638 doesn’t differ hugely from the P735, with a similar Android TV set and use of TCL’s IPQ quad core processor.

VA panels tend to deliver better contrast but narrower realistic viewing angles than rival IPS technology. As well the FreeView Play perks of the Android Smart TV platform, the P735 also offers up TCL Home and Google Home, Google Duo and Google Assistant built-in, along with Alexa compatibility for hands-free voice control. Dialogue remains clear and warm even when there’s a royal racket going on behind it, too, and the soundstage doesn’t collapse in on itself during massive movie moments like all too many built-in TV sound systems do. This is the followed with a further digit cementing each model’s place in the Series (the P638 ranked above the P635 and RP630), and the last letter denoting the region (with K being the UK). Feel more: Turn up the volume on your emotions with audio so rich and pure, you’ll feel a stronger connection to the characters and music.

The soundbar has a total output power of 30W and uses Dolby Atmos technology to create a more immersive audio experience. The TCL C735 sits just below the top-of-the-range mini LED models in the 2022 range, offering a value proposition with a global dimming direct LED backlight, a VA panel, QLED colour enhancement and a full range of HDR and picture features. The remote that ships with the TV is similar to the Roku remotes that have shipped with past models, but it gets the job done.

That's all thanks to the new Mini LED backlight system that uses thousands of LEDs instead of hundreds to get near-perfect black levels next to bright highlights. On the audio front, all but the cheapest LCDs come with Dolby Atmos as standard, with both the QLED and Mini LED models using an Onkyo sound system – with the C835 and C935 adding an extra channel or two, along with Adaptive Sound tech (the latter also found on the C735). Even more surprising for the 55C735K’s money is its support for the latest cutting-edge gaming graphics features of 4K/120Hz feeds (the screen is actually rated to 144Hz) and VRR on two of its four HDMIs. Because the TCL 6-Series has Atmos passthrough and eARC, setup is incredibly simple and well-worth the investment. This will immediately win the 55C735K a gamer fan base – especially as it backs up its advanced graphics handling with support for ALLM switching, compatibility with the FreeSync Premium VRR system, a Game Bar screen providing fast access to game settings and graphics info, and an input lag figure in its Game mode of 13.So unlike, say, all of LG’s TVs, which don’t support HDR10+, and all of Samsung TVs, which don’t support Dolby Vision, the TCL 55C735K will play the best version available of whatever source you feed it. As with the P635, there’s Dolby Audio rather than Dolby Atmos, but the RP630K does come with Dolby Vision and Apple AirPlay 2.
