About this deal

This move was made out of necessity as NVIDIA desperately needed the extra power for their most powerful cards and came up with a rather elegant solution. Connecting the GPU to the power supply unit is not very tedious, and you can do it yourself if you know of setting up a system.

GPU Power Connectors Explained [Simple Answer] - GPU Mag GPU Power Connectors Explained [Simple Answer] - GPU Mag

For example, the EPS connector (cpu 8 pin) may have pins that are made by bending the metal into a square tube and then placing a cap at the top to create the pin OR the pins may actually be made from solid thick metal polished at the top - the first kind of pins hollow on the inside are only rated for 9-10A, while the solid core ones are rated for 13A+ . NVIDIA eventually developed an efficient cable system, as it needed cables to draw more power externally for its GPUs. The usual 12-pin cables with 18 AWG-rated wires can extract up to 500 watts of power, directly bypassing the motherboard.Because there were relatively few PSUs with a 12-pin power connector on the launch of the 3000 series, NVIDIA included a dual 8-pin to 12-pin adapter with its product. Essentially differences like that are to prevent you from plugging in a PCIe connector into a EPS12V. Thus, if your PSU doesn’t have an 8-pin connector to support your high-ranking GPU, you can utilize a 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter. I don't know if this is the only PSU having this flaw, I haven't seen PCIe plug with rounded top right pin on Corsair PSUs. Ribbon cables and Molex connectors were traditionally used for this purpose but today we increasingly find cables are much smaller and flatter allowing for better cable management and to prevent a reduction in airflow.

In such cases, the graphics card draws 75 watts of power from the PCIe x16 connector, and the additional 75 watts of power get extracted from the 6-pin connectors. Some cables come in all black, especially those come with power supply for cosmetic and some in all yellow anyway, you can't actually rely on the color. So, if you expect a desirable performance from your PC, you need highly efficient GPU power connectors. In such cases, when you connect any external component offered by any third party, you will find a lot of compatibility issues. As said, I have successfully converted EPS extension cable for PCI-E by swapping the color wires and cut a slit on the female connector. The lack of a handful of pins creates a load on the motherboard, forcing the entire circuit to break down. A SATA to Molex adapter could be exposed and lead to burnout if the GPU draws more power with a higher load or by overclocking.

So in theory, an pci-e 8 pin connector that has 3 pairs of wires carrying 12v to the video card could deliver safely around 9A through each pair. While the video cards may have a 8 pin connector, that doesn't mean they "pull" 150 watts from that connector. It might be only an exception found with FSP PSU, but a single difference in one male pin on PCIe connector allows to plug your PSU totally wrong. Some PSU maker could use a different pinout on the PSU, so even if the pinout is standard from the GPU side, it is not from the PSU side. EVGA single power supply cables are designed to replace missing or lost cables for a limited number of EVGA modular or semi-modular power supply models, and are officially certified only to work on a limited number of EVGA power supplies, which can be found on the compatibility tab.

If you’ve recently purchased a top-class GPU, it will likely require an 8-pin connector, which some PSUs might not have. This power adapter cable offers you compatibility with SATA connectors and draws more than 150 watts of power for your GPU.

This tool allows you to create a custom 8 pin PCIe GPU extension cable – ensuring your cables perfectly fit every aspect of your colour scheme. If possible, it’s best to use Molex to Molex for your GPU needs, as they have thicker wires and can transfer more current. If your slots are not compatible with the GPU connectors, you can use an adapter to get compatibility.
