About this deal

I would have preferred the story been as nuanced with emotional depth in the last half, as it was in the first half. After she decides to leave and convinces Sigurd, this is when she faces Odin who says she isn’t allowed to leave the simulation. There is Zed (Samuel Larsen), Jace the Townie (Swen Temmel), Molly (Inanna Sarkis), and the rude boy Hardin (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin).

After The End is a heartbreaking, painful issue-driven story that explores an unthinkable, impossible and unimaginable decision with no right answers, our main characters here parents Pip and Max are left to make after their son Dylan is diagnosed with a brain tumour. Much of the dialogue seemed repetitive from one thread to the other and at times it was difficult to follow the back and forth between the two separate scenarios. One area that this book covers exceptionally well is the impact of each of two possible court decisions on Pip and Max’s relationship. The diagnosis is a nightmare and although Dylan is operated on, the prognosis is not good and then the worst happens the tumor grows. Perilous terrain spans the distance between them, and deranged survivors lurk in dark corners everywhere. The only other small issue I had with the last half was that I dearly missed Leila's viewpoint – she was a wonderful character that I would've liked to have heard more from. In the current environment one would expect an abundance of face masks or gratuitous hand sanitizing – but that’s a different pandemic. It transpires that Basim is the reincarnation of Loki in Eivor’s Norse Isu past, meaning that he wants his fellow Isu dead in revenge for their treatment of his son. He grabs hold of the book, runs it up her inner thigh using it to lift up her dress slightly and leans into her.

Clare Mackintosh compassionately explores all of this in this unforgettable, emotionally powered story that deeply moved me. until you come upon a cross-road, AKA a punch in the gut, a life-altering occurrence, a devastating threat, loss or change. Four years later, the world has changed and the film feels more prescient, and people who don’t get enough daily anxiety in their real-world existence may find it appealing. Max and Pip must decide if they should explore a treatment which will NOT cure him, but MAY extend his life. Perhaps because I have been at difficult crossroads before, but certainly because I know I will be facing huge medical decisions of a loved one with a very rare genetic disease. When parents differ on what the fate of a beloved child should be, it makes sense that it is hard for them to reconcile their differences.
